Authorities say Alzheimer's patient Arletha Bennett, 77, of Waynesboro, walked away from her home on Herman Lodge Road late Thursday.

Waynesboro Police Chief Augustus Palmer III said Monday that his department, along with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and numerous volunteers, searched from sunup to sundown over the weekend without finding 77-year-old Arletha Bennett, of Waynesboro.

“No stone left unturned is our approach,” Palmer said. “We had another search effort begin around noon today, and that’s still ongoing.”

Bennett was last seen Thursday night at her home on Herman Lodge Road, and police think she may have left between 9 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday.

In a post on the Waynesboro Police Department’s Facebook page Monday, the department urged citizens to check any sheds, cars, buildings and wooded areas where Bennett might have sought shelter.

According to the post, Bennett has talked about the Midville, Ga., area and is a retired teacher, who formerly taught at Blakney Elementary school in Waynesboro.

“She was pretty much a person that stayed at home and who had around-the-clock care,” Palmer said. “Right now we are going back and double-checking areas to make sure we didn’t miss anything.”

Bennett is described as 5 feet, 8 inches tall and about 160 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information can call the Waynesboro Police Department at (706) 554-8029.
