Derwin Mitchell, of Breeze Hill Road, said he received a call about 4:30 p.m. from someone who identified himself as Lt. Anthony Johnson of the sheriff’s office’s warrants division, a police report states. The caller said he had a warrant for Mitchell’s arrest for skipping jury duty.
Mitchell was told that he could pay a fine by phone and not go to jail. Mitchell said he was asked to put $426.13 on a Green Dot MoneyPak card and call back with the card number.
After buying the card and calling back to pay the phony fine, Mitchell said, he called one more time to confirm the warrant was removed. The suspect did not answer, according to the report.
