Horses rescued from Aiken barn fire

Four horses were rescued after an Aiken barn at McGhee’s Mile caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

Sgt. Jake Mahoney, of Aiken Department of Public Safety, said responders were called to the fire at McGhee’s Mile, formerly known as Aiken Training Track, on Banks Mill Road about 1 p.m.

Officers and passers-by helped to rescue the horses; none were injured during the incident.

Mahoney said it appears the fire started as a result of a man attempting to thaw a frozen water line with a blowtorch. The fire was reported shortly after the man, who keeps a horse in the barn, left the area.

Owner Janis McGhee said most of the damage was structural and that equipment was saved from the fire.

“It couldn’t have turned out any better,” she said. “It was just one stall, so there’s not much to replace.”

McGhee said she doesn’t yet know how much the repairs will cost.

McGhee’s Mile has three tracks and about 400 horse stalls on the property.
