According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, several local owners have contacted the department over the past several days to complain about receiving calls from an unknown person warning that their liquor permit fees have not been cleared for 2014.
If the owners refused to pay their fees over the phone via credit card, the person warned they would be shut down within hours by the sheriff’s office; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; or the Georgia Department of Revenue.
Police say the person is attempting to obtain information for “illegal purposes.”
Lt. Lewis Blanchard said none of the agencies would make such calls or collect fees via credit card over the phone.
Police say if owners get such calls, they should ask for the name of the officer or agent, then call back at the number on the agency’s Web site.
