In an effort to combat traffic congestion during the holiday season, the Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend construction-related lane closures on all interstates and major state routes.

According to a statement from the department, the suspensions will begin Friday at 5 p.m., and will last through 5 a.m. on Jan. 2. Some long-term closures, however, may continue to be in place.

The department is also reminding motorist to expect congestion near malls and retail centers throughout the week, and urges travelers to check traffic maps through Georgia 511, a program which provides statewide traffic conditions and estimated travel times.

The automated system can connect callers to airports in Atlanta or Savannah to obtain information on parking and possible delays, according to the statement. Live operators may also be reached through the system to report accidents or congestion.
