New Ellenton man charged in hit-and-run

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a New Ellenton man has been charged in Friday’s fatal hit-and-run in Aiken County.

Michael Anthony Cornelius, 23, has been charged with leaving the scene of a collision involving death and is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center, Cpl. Sonny Collins said.

According to a statement from Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, Shawnt’a Smalls, 27, of Aiken, was walking near 4501 Whiskey Road when she was struck by what appeared to be a late-model Chevrolet. The incident is believed to have taken place between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team will continue to investigate, Collins said.

Sketchy info in this report, but I assume it's because the story is still breaking. It would be good to know if the collar is because of great detective skill, dumb luck, or perhaps the guy turned himself in.

Whatever it is he needs to be under the jailhouse! I have already run into 3 people who knew Shawnt'a and they all say she a good person who would do anything for anyone. She is also the cousin of one of my coworkers. Regardless how the incident unfolded that driver failed to stop after an accident. As a result the incident is no longer an accident but a felony criminal offense. I hope he get's many years in the House to think of his actions.
