An Augusta man was forced to crash-land his experimental aircraft in Edgefield County on Monday, less than 10 miles from the site of last week’s fatal plane crash in Trenton, S.C.

About 3:30 p.m., rescue crews were called to the scene at Girl Scout Camp Road near the Trenton Airport in Trenton, S.C., where the man, who has not been identified by authorities, was forced to crash land, Edgefield County dispatch said.

Edgefield County Emergency Management Director Mike Casey said the Piper Tri-Pacer experienced engine trouble.

After failed attempts to restart the engine, the pilot attempted to land the plane in a soy field near the airport, but crashed when a wing clipped the top of a tree, causing the craft to strike a power line.

The pilot was able to walk away from the crash, and was treated by paramedics at the scene. He sustained minor injuries to his hand.

The incident comes exactly one week after a plane crash near Twin Lakes Airport, which is near Trenton, which took the life of 56-year-old Richard Showalter, of Graniteville.

Showalter was the only occupant of the twin-engine Piper Aztec plane that crashed on Nov. 25 in a wooded area off of Rachel Avenue.

“The wreckage is almost similar in nature to the crash a week ago,” Casey said. “This time the pilot walked away with minor injuries.”

Casey said he participated in a conference call with the Federal Aviation Administration Monday afternoon, and that the organization is sending an investigator to the scene.

The National Transportation Safety Board will wait to hear from the FAA before it becomes involved, Casey said.

“It’s just so quick on the heels of the other one,” Casey said. “That’s very unusual for us.”
