Glenn Vincent Riggs II, 22, is charged with murder.

“I’m still in shock,” said Mary Valliant, the CEO of Southern Palmetto Hospital in Barnwell, S.C., where Mann had worked as a general surgeon since March. “He just didn’t deserve to die like this.”

Mann’s body was found Saturday in Augusta and a suspect in the case is in the Richmond County jail facing several charges, including murder.

According to a statement released Sunday morning by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Glenn Vincent Riggs II, 22, is charged with murder and robbery by force in Mann’s death.

Valliant said she last saw Mann, 60, on Thursday night at a hospital-sponsored health fair he led in Williston.

Later that night, Mann was reported missing. On Friday, his blue 2006 Honda Civic was found in a wooded area in the 3400 block of Old Louisville Road in Augusta.

“I really hoped we could find him,” Valliant said Sunday.

Police said they believe Mann was killed at Riggs’ residence in the 2600 block of Dublin Drive.

Riggs also had several outstanding misdemeanor warrants seeking his arrest.

Mann was a “highly recommended” surgeon with more than 27 years of experience who always stayed positive, Valliant said.

“I have nothing but wonderful things to say about him,” said the hospital executive.

That sentiment was echoed by patients, including Felicia Holman.

“He is a good person and an awesome surgeon. He was so good to me when I had my surgery,” Holman wrote on The People-Sentinel’s Facebook page.

Tonya Hammet remembers Mann’s bedside manners, something “that is very hard to find these days.”

Mann lived in Barnwell County during the week, but traveled home to Kathleen, Ga., on weekends to spend time with family.

According to the hospital’s Web site, he was a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine. As part of his residency, Mann did pediatric surgery at Queen Mary’s Hospital for Sick Children, Carshalton, England.

“My prayers and condolences are extended to his family and coworkers,” Michelle Baptiste Reed said on Facebook. “May justice be served.”

A public memorial service is being planned, but Valliant said a date has not been set.

Chronicle Staff Writer Bill Kirby contributed to this report.

Sympathy to family

But what was a 60-year-old doctor doing at this 22-year-old thug's house? Was he looking for something he shouldn't have been looking for? Is it possible he was carjacked and taken there, or had a breakdown while driving and was kidnapped and taken there? His car's location might have been on his normal route home - ?? These things need to be cleared up.

ARCJ inmate inquiry...

Waymore, the ARCJ inmate inquiry is unreliable at times. We go by what the sheriff's office says or by what's on the committal.

Dublin Drive

Yes, that is not an area that a Dr would be in unless he was taken there.
It will be interesting to see what the details are.
Prayers to his family.
Why is it that we are worsening as a nation instead of becoming better than we were previously?

What a missed opportunity to say something that might, in some small way, help to uplift this family.

"When will it stop? Man's inhumanity to man....." This sort of thing has been going on since the beginning of time. It is sad and especially sad to think that this thug murdered someone who was doing a service to mankind through his medical practice. His route from Barnwell to Kathleen, Ga. could have taken him down Peach Orchard Rd. to Stateboro and then home. It seems that he must have crossed paths with this guy and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. References to him going to this guys residence don't make sense and I don't like the insinuations!

And the speculation begins along with irrelevant comments (see eschamb's). Let us hold our remarks until information is properly provided and is felt to be factual. And even then, show some respect for all involved and comment accordingly.
With that, prayers to those who knew Dr. Mann and may justice be fairly applied to the young man in question.

Sweet son, I'm not sure what

Sweet son, I'm not sure what you're getting at. Are you agreeing with me or disagreeing with me about my resurrecting a fragment of an old saying about man's inhumanity to man, when you say this has gone on since the beginning of time? I hope you understand that I am well aware that as long as there have been human beings this has gone on. I ask also because you addressed only me then complained in the same post about insinuations you resent about the Doctor going to the suspect's residence. Did you mean someone else's post? Because I sure didn't, and wouldn't, make such insinuations. Could you clarify please? I don't want people to infer that I jumped to any conclusions. That is not my way.

Seems like law enforcement was very quick to link this guy to the doctors murder. I wonder if the doctor would be alive if someone had served the warrants they already had on him? Condolences to the man's family and I hope they see justice for their loved one.

Knowing where a wanted person lives does not mean he is going to BE THERE when they come to pick him up.

Animals

It's sad that we have to live among animals, and this has nothing to do with color, it has to do with any subhuman of any race who preys on the seemingly weak. My suggestion is that all who can, obtain a conceal carry permit, arm yourself and respond when conforted. I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Stop the speculation!

I think it is totally appropriate to comment on the news of the day, death involved or not; but I wish you guys would refrain from innuendo that the doctor may have been involved in his own demise through illegal activity.
We are all concerned about how their paths crossed, as we want to be diligent to avoid the same; but until those facts come out, let's just stick to asking how and why without the "maybe this and maybe that".
Just my .02.

How and Why???

itsanotherday1,

People are always going to play armchair quaterback, even you at one time or another I will bet on that. And how does asking how and why as you suggest, makes that any different than others direction of thought? So, let me retort.

Whyyou ask? I don't care about why. If he were buying drugs or looking for a lady of the night, it does not justify murdering him. And as for how, that does not matter either. He could have been murdered with a tea cup, and he would have been just as dead. So taking your advice of asking the why and how, makes your suggestion irrelevant and just as speculative as any other positing.

Wondering HOW their paths crossed is in no way speculating that the Dr. was involved in any shenanigans.

qualifing I see....

itsanotherday1,

I can cross anyone's path at anytime. So what. . . . Oh, the Dr. happened to stop to buy gas, or stopped at a red light, or stopped to assist a motorist. . . pick one of those as a learning example of what not to do.... Give me a break. None of this matters, and I doubt he was buying dope as being a doctor, he had access to what ever he wanted...
