2 charged in sheriff's office bike theft

Two juveniles have been charged with stealing two bicycles from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office property storage area at 400 Walton Way on Friday.

The juveniles were charged Tuesday with felony interference with government property and misdemeanor theft by taking, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office has not released their names.

About 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Richmond County dispatcher Kimberly Rhaney noticed the suspects lifting the bicycles over the fence surrounding the storage area, according to an incident report.

Police say the suspects damaged the barbed wire surrounding the fence, and left before deputies arrived. Deputies recovered one of the bikes, a red Schwinn men’s bicycle, in the parking lot of Red Lobster at 440 Walton Way.

The bicycles had sheriff’s office evidence tags, though they were not linked to any crime, deputies said.

The second bicycle has not been recovered.
