Karen Elizabeth Harrison, 29, of Stacey Circle, has been charged with felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, simple battery and misdemeanor theft by shoplifting for the incident at the Wal-Mart at 3209 Deans Bridge Road, according to jail records.
About 12:05 p.m., Ernest Hooks, a Wal-Mart employee, alerted a nearby deputy that Harrison had placed several items into a large black purse and attempted to leave the store. As Harrison approached the exit, she noticed the deputy and immediately turned around to walk to the rear of the store, according to the report.
Harrison emptied the items – four 40-ounce candles and six pairs of leggings – from her purse and attempted to leave the store again. Hooks escorted her to the store’s security office, where she began fumbling with her keys before using pepper spray on Hooks and the deputy.
The deputy took Harrison into custody, and she was booked into the Augusta-Richmond County jail.
