Eleven vehicles crashed on westbound Bobby Jones Expressway on Wednesday morning after traffic slowed to look at a motorcycle crash on the eastbound side.
Police were called to Bobby Jones at Gordon Highway about 7:30 a.m. for five separate crashes and discovered four crashes involving 11 vehicles on the westbound side and a car-motorcycle crash on the eastbound side.
Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Michael McDaniel said the first crash occurred when a motorcycle struck the rear of a vehicle attempting to merge onto the expressway. The motorcyclist was ejected.
Vehicles in the westbound lanes slowed to “observe” the incident and began crashing into one another, McDaniel said.
One eastbound lane was shut down for 30 minutes, and all westbound lanes were shut down for about one hour.
All crashes were attributed to following too closely and drivers being distracted, McDaniel said.
Seven people were taken to hospitals, but no serious injuries were reported.
