Kim Moore wonders whether her brother would have survived if the person who hit him with a car had stopped and called for help. Instead, the driver kept going, leaving Monty Pettit to die in the road.

Monty Pettit, 49, was killed Nov. 3, 2012, on South Carolina Highway 302 near Wagener.

“It breaks my heart to think of that baby laying out there,” Moore said of Pettit, 49, who was killed Nov. 3, 2012, in Aiken County.

Police and family are still searching for answers to what happened that night on South Carolina Highway 302 near Wagener.

“It’s been very painful and stressful,” Moore said.

“There’s still that missing piece.”

South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said evidence left at the scene helped them identify the vehicle as a 1999 to 2006 metallic-blue Volvo S80, but tips have not led them to the driver or vehicle. The vehicle could have damaged parking lights and possibly a damaged bumper.

Moore said Pettit was walking from a friend’s house about 11:45 p.m. to a nearby home where his brother was staying when he was hit.

It was already a rough time for the family. Pettit’s 20-year-old daughter had died of colon cancer the day before.

Police told Moore that Pettit might have been lying on the road for nearly an hour before another vehicle came along and found him.

Crimestoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol at (803) 896-9621 or Crimestoppers at (888) 274-6372.

One Year

If you haven't solved a hit and run in a year, you are not going to solve it. The parking lights and the bumper have been replaced.

You are not going to solve it?

LL glad the LE doesn't have the same attitude. I have contacted the SCHP. I purchased a S80 that while its not the same color, it did have the same damage described in this article. The SCHP will be coming out to check out the vehicle I purchased. While it may not be the vehicle, I do want to have a clear conscious. They do feel its worth looking into. I pray that it is not the vehicle. I also hope they do solve this case.
