Augusta man charged in hit-and-run that killed 2

Derrick Larenzo Thompkins

A 25-year-old man who turned himself in for a hit-and-run that killed two people Saturday was charged Wednesday.

Derrick Larenzo Thompkins was charged with two felony counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, two felony counts of hit and run and a misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The bodies of Jerry Mims, 58, and Tonya Lane, 54, both of Augusta, were found lying in the road on the 2200 block of White Road early Saturday.

Thompkins, of Brynmawr Drive, turned himself in Tuesday after the sheriff’s office released his photo and named him as someone they wanted to question.

On Monday, authorities offered a reward for information about the incident.

Thompkins was being held Wednesday in the Richmond County jail.
