Police say a person of interest in a hit-and-run that killed two pedestrians Saturday morning turned himself in Tuesday.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday released a photo of Derrick Larenzo Thompkins, 25, of Brynmawr Drive, as someone they wanted to question in the hit-and-run that killed Jerry Mims, 58, and Tonya Lane, 54, both of Augusta.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, charges against Thompkins are pending.

Deputies were called Saturday to the 2200 block of White Road, where they discovered the bodies lying in the road.

Authorities on Monday offered a reward for information into the incident. Soon after, police issued an alert for a possible suspect vehicle, which has been described as a gold or tan Pontiac G6 rental car.

Police said the reward was still being offered, and the traffic division was still investigating the accident.

Anyone with information can contact the sheriff’s office at (706) 821-1080 or (706) 821-1483.

Accidents happen

Unless whoever hit these poor folks did it on purpose, why run? Running makes a bad situation worse. Do the right thing.

Already had a photo

So the sheriff already had a photo of this scumbag. Why would they have had a photo? Oh, I know. Someone in the department must have been at some social function also attended by Thompkins. At the function there was a professional photographer taking photos of all the attendees. Then the member of the department just happened to obtain a copy of Thompkins and brought it to work one day and stuck it in a drawer. And, lo and behold, it just happened to be the person who "inadvertently" ran down these people along the road.

follow the trail

Since a rental car is being mentioned in the article, I took it to mean that this person of interest must have been connected to that rental car. Hitting two people had to cause damage - perhaps when the car was returned with some damage to it, the rental car company reported the damage to the police. It could very well be coincidental, but I'd expect the police to review all possible leads. That this guy obviously has a mug shot doesn't necessarily mean he's guilty of this crime, but it doesn't help him from a reputation standpoint. I'm sure we'll hear more on this. Ultimately, I hope they find the coward that did this.

Well, one possibility would be that the driver was DUI and wanted to avoid a manslaughter, or murder charge.

Since Mugshot pictures were provided before his surrender.

It figures he was already in the system.
Turns out he was for drug possession of Alprazolam, a year ago October.

It is a drug used to treat panic disorders.
