A SWAT team helped defuse a standoff Tuesday.

A Graniteville man is accused of using a homemade flamethrower on Aiken County deputies trying to serve him probate papers Tuesday morning.

According to a sheriff’s news release, family members of the suspect, whose name has not been released, told police he was at the U.S. Highway 1 home but would not come to the door.

After deputies breached the door, the suspect used the flamethrower on them. The deputies responded by shooting him in the leg with a bean bag round.

The suspect fled to the rear of the home and refused to communicate with deputies, police said.

The Aiken County SWAT team deployed a chemical agent into the residence.

The man came out and was taken into custody without further incident.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety assisted the sheriff’s office in shutting down roads surrounding the home while deputies handled the incident.

No deputies were injured.

The suspect was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Criminal charges of assault and battery first degree are pending.

Police said they are withholding the suspect’s name because of the mental health nature of the call.

Maybe this guy did not want

Maybe this guy did not want to see his family. They can be a pain in the behind you know. But oh no, you just got to go over there and make the man get his flamethrower out.

How can they bust his door

How can they bust his door open because chose not to answer it or accept probate papers? What kind of probate papers? Either this is not the whole story or someone overstepped their boundary!

Inventive

How about a picture of the Flamethrower...

I have seen articles in Northern papers calling
a spray can and a Lighter a Flamethrower device.

But this guy sounds like he has the real thing.

SWAT was created for the most

SWAT was created for the most dangerous situations -- hostages, snipers, barricaded suspects. 1980 saw fewer than 3,000 SWAT raids; but today, SWAT is deployed more than 50,000 times annually, mostly in routine drug enforcement. The proliferation of this aggressive, militarized tactic has seen a steady drumbeat of heart attacks, fires, and killings resulting directly from it. Compared with the total number of SWAT raids, killings of humans in them are infrequent. But every SWAT raid inflicts a trauma the people inside a home may never fully recover from, and carries the risk of such tragedy.
Yes, we have given even the smallest, local yokel police forces expensive toys so they can play grown up cops and robbers. The police (even a small outfit such as Aiken County) have evolved into a military outfit. Rather than risk their lives in Afghanistan, these guys would rather bust down doors for minor drug busts and probate warrants.
Take a look at this one, it's just one of thousands-a cop and a citizen died needlessly because of SWAT. The citizen was growing pot for his personal use. But this is in Utah; it is just as backward as the CSRA

I did not see where it said

I did not see where it said when the SWAT team was called in. Did you? Perhaps SWAT can use chemicals other law reinforcement people do not regularly carry.

Perhaps this upstanding citizen was a known nutcase. Nutcase people are free to live here without SWAT interference until they act out being nutcases.

It was a COMMITMENT ORDER,

It was a COMMITMENT ORDER, people, and yes, the police had every right to go inside the house. There was a court order issued that said he was to be taken into custody and remanded to a mental health facility. And judging by what happened, the family did the right and necessary thing. Here's hoping the man can get the help that he needs, and thank God that nobody was hurt.
