Police said a pedestrian who was hit while walking down the center of Gordon Highway was under the influence of alcohol.

According to a news release, Dario Martin Caceres, 32, of North Augusta, was in the middle of the Gordon Highway bridge near the state line when he was hit by a Chevrolet Impala about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver told police she hit the brakes to avoid hitting the pedestrian but saw him too late.

Caceres is at Georgia Regents Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said Caceres was at fault in the accident. He faces citations of pedestrian under the influence of alcohol and pedestrian must walk along the shoulder of the roadway.
