An Aiken man was charged Wednesday with third degree assault and battery for alledgedly striking Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt.

Nathan Lively, 31, led the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office on a two-hour long manhunt before a bloodhound tracking team located the suspect in a wooded area off Belvedere-Clearwater Road about 3 p.m., said sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah.

About 1 p.m., Hunt questioned lively in the parking lot of Signature Hair Design, 1009 Belvedere-Clearwater Road, because he matched a description of a burglary suspect. Deputies were patrolling the area because several burglaries were reported.

As Hunt was talking to Lively, he attempted to flee. Hunt grabbed the suspect’s clothing, and Lively used his hand to swat at the sheriff and hit him in the side near his rib cage, Abdullah said.

Because the incident happened so quickly, a more detailed description of the manner by which Lively hit Hunt was not known, Abdullah said. Hunt was not injured.

Abdullah said it was not known if Lively was connected to the burglaries, but an investigation is ongoing.
