A 41-year-old Augusta man has been charged with a slaying Sunday.

Ezra Thyrone Lay, of Carrie Avenue, was booked on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon soon after police discovered the body of James Marshall about 1:15 a.m. at Carrie and D’Antignac Street.

Police said Marshall, 44, of Lincolnton, died from gunshot wounds.

Although the weapon that Lay had in his possession at the time of his arrest is not believed to be connected to the death, investigators said there was enough evidence to add charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime on Tuesday.

Additional details on the shooting or a motive have not been released.

The death was the 16th homicide of the year.
