Witnesses began testifying Tuesday in the trial of a teen accused of murder in the death of a friend.

Verdre Scott, 16, has pleaded not guilty to the charges in Richmond County Superior Court. He is accused of being responsible for the death of Martez S. Davis on Dec. 19.

The state contends Scott is responsible because Davis, 16, was killed while he and Scott were committing a felony, the robbery of another teen, James Gibbons.

Gibbons, 18, testified Tuesday that he was taking a shortcut near Amsterdam Drive in the Barton Village neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. Dec. 19, when he was confronted by Davis and another person he knew as “Poochie”.

Although Gibbons testified he identified the second person for sheriff investigators, he could not identify that person in court Tuesday. “I forgot (what he looked like).”

Gibbons testified the two teens tried to rob him and that Davis shot him. Gibbons testified he pulled his own gun and fired, too.

Under cross-examination Gibbons said he could have shot himself when Scott grabbed for the gun. He denied he was seeking revenge against Davis for stealing a gun from him, a statement a later witness attributed to Gibbons the night of the shooting.

Gibbons also denied firing the first gunshot that night, as he had told others, according to other witnesses.

Testimony continues at 9:30 a.m. today.
