'Cops' to film in Richmond County

A film crew will be tagging along with Richmond County sheriff’s deputies to find Augusta’s “bad boys” during filming for the television show Cops.

Sheriff Richard Roundtree signed an agreement April 4 with Langley Productions Inc. It was obtained through an open records request to the sheriff’s office.

Cops, which follows police during patrols and other activities, premiered in March 1989 and is one of the longest-running TV shows in history. It has been filmed in 140 U.S. cities and in Hong Kong, London and the former Soviet Union, according to its Web site.

After 25 seasons on Fox, Cops moved to Spike TV this month.

The agreement does not specify when filming will begin and end or when the segments will air. Police said they are unable to comment on the filming timeline.

The agreement says all filming activity will be under control of the sheriff’s office’s officer in charge. It states that some officers and residents can refuse to be filmed and that the sheriff’s office has no obligation to compel them to do so. The sheriff’s office also has the right to review and approve all completed segments before broadcast.
