CORRECTION: An Augusta man charged with cruelty to children is not the father of the victim in the case, as reported in Wednesday’s editions of The Augusta Chronicle. A Richmond County sheriff’s investigator said Friday that Albert Terrell Scurry is the father of other children by the mother of the victim.

Also, because inaccurate information was provided, the location of the reported incident is not the home of the mother.

The Chronicle regrets the error.

An Augusta man has been accused of cruelty to children after striking a child with a belt and a piece of wood.

Albert Terrell Scurry, 40, of Southdale Drive, was booked into the Augusta-Richmond County jail Tuesday on a charge of cruelty to children in the first degree in connection with the incident.

The child, whose age was withheld, contacted the Columbia County Department of Family and Children Services on July 3, days after Scurry hit him in June, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The child told DFCS agents and Richmond County investigators that his mother, Shakemma Trowel, 35, accused him of stealing marijuana from her bedroom and giving it to someone else in the area. Trowel later called Scurry, who came over with a belt and a piece of wood similar to a furniture leg.

Scurry struck the child on his back, stomach, arms, legs and buttocks before punching him in the right eye, the report said. DFCS agents photographed the child’s injuries before turning the investigation over to the sheriff’s office.

This is tragic.

But the kid is brave. How many don't say a thing and become abusive themselves? I pray that this brave boy goes on to a fulfilling life with no violence. And his father goes to prison and experiences the torture of something similar to a furniture leg daily.

With great parents like this how could this child go wrong? Take the poor child away from both and maybe he'll have a chance. It was just bad luck of the draw for the poor kid.

Take Them Both to the Swamp

Okay Shakemma, why would there even BE an illegal substance in your bedroom to begin with? HUH? I pray that the son is taken in by a loving family member. His parents are both pieces of excrement. If not the swamp, then dad goes to jail for a LONG time, and mom will eventually get caught, since now the Sheriff's Office knows her name, and knows she keeps weed. I CAN'T WAIT !!

I spoke to Travis, and he rechecked the police report. We do have a mistake here. We will rewrite this and get a correction here and in the print edition. Thank you for letting us know.
