About 9:15 a.m., the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office, Swainsboro Police Department and the Twin City Police Department were dispatched to Swainsboro High School for a bomb threat, according to a statement from the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office. The school was evacuated.
While police investigated the bomb threat, they were informed of an armed robbery at the Swainsboro branch of Robins Federal Credit Union. With the help of eyewitness accounts, officers stopped a suspect, Otis Alexander, 34, of Swainsboro, within minutes of the robbery.
Investigators later determined that the bomb threat and robbery were related, calling the threat a “diversionary tactic,” according to the statement. No explosive devices were found.
Alexander was being held in the Emanuel County Jail without bond on felony charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, transmitting a false public alarm and terroristic threats and acts.
