According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, the bus driver, Charles Simpkins, 58, was charged with failure to yield right of way.
Jones said Simpkins was driving east on Rudy Mason Parkway with 18 students and turned left onto Wire Road and hit a Chevrolet pickup that was westbound on the parkway.
The bus then ran into a Honda Pilot SUV and a Dodge pickup that were stopped at the red light on Wire Road.
The driver of the Dodge and the driver and passenger of the Chevrolet were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. Simpkins was also treated for minor injuries.
Jones said five students were taken to the emergency room at Aiken Regional Medical Centers for minor injuries. The remaining students were bused to the hospital for treatment. The student’s schools and ages were not provided.
