ATHENS, Ga. — Police arrested a Madison County woman Monday night after her children took her keys to prevent her from driving drunk.

Tammy Terrell Evans, 35, caused such a commotion while trying to get back the keys to her car from her teenagers that someone called 911, police said.

The officer found no one where the dispute reportedly occurred, the parking lot of a Walgreens, police said, but he heard yelling coming from a group of people at Taco Bell across the street.

As the people then crossed the street toward Walgreens, the officer could hear Evans yelling and cursing at her 13-year-old daughter and demanding her keys, according to police.

The girl and her 15-year-old brother explained to the officer that while their mother was driving to pick up a food order at Red Lobster, the car struck a curb, police said.

After getting the order, Evans returned to the car and drove again, police said, and the children alerted her to a back tire being flat.

The woman pulled into the parking lot at Walgreens, where her children took the car keys from her.

“They said that they took the keys from (Evans) and she was upset because they were trying to tell her she was doing wrong and that they (were) trying to keep her from getting into trouble,” the officer wrote in a police incident report.

Evans told the officer that while picking up the food order at Red Lobster she had two beers and a shot of tequila, but the children and an adult passenger said she wasn’t inside that long, police said.

When the officer told her he was charging her with DUI, Evans refused to sign the citation because she insisted she couldn’t be charged because the officer didn’t witness her driving, according to police.

At the police station, the Hull resident’s blood-alcohol level tested at 0.181 and 0.169 in separate tests.

In addition to DUI, Evans was charged with DUI/endangering a child, disorderly conduct, improper driving, public intoxication and a learner’s permit infraction.

Cudo's to the two young children for being more adult than their mom. It's a prime example of why far too many kids get in trouble with a parent like this. Hopefully she won't take her incarceration out on them and she'll learn from this. Although, I doubt it!
