One person died and another was injured after a mobile home fire Tuesday morning in North Augusta.

Midland Valley Fire Department Assistant Chief Clay Chipley said firefighters were called to 5038 Dogwood Drive about 7:30 a.m. The residence was mostly engulfed with smoke and fire. Several bystanders were trying to get inside but were unsuccessful.

“It was too far gone to even attempt a rescue,” Chipley said.

Rebecca Massaro was on her way to work when she saw the fire. One man with burns was seated on the ground when she got there. He said someone else was trapped inside.

Massaro’s boss, Eddie Moore, of Bath, also was going to work when he saw a cloud of smoke.

Moore grabbed a shovel from his truck to help a deputy break out a window in an attempt to save the man trapped inside. They broke out the window, but flames coming out of the opening prevented them from entering the home.

“They said we weren’t three feet away from him but we couldn’t get him out,” Moore said.

The person who was injured, who had not been identified late Tuesday, was taken to Doctors Hospital. The person who died inside also was not identified, pending notification of next of kin.
