As part of a nationwide investigation 11 local people have been arrested on child exploitation and prostitution charges, officials at the FBI field office in Augusta confirmed Monday.

The suspects’ identities have not been released.

Jim Harrison, the supervisor senior resident agent at the FBI, said the arrests were made in connection with Operation Cross Country VII. The effort involved 47 FBI divisions in 76 cities across the country. The operation rescued 105 children being victimized through prostitution, agents said, and led to 19 arrests in Georgia on child exploitation and prostitution charges.

In the Augusta area, nine people were arrested on prostitution-related charges and two more arrests were made on exploitation charges, Atlanta FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett said.

Harrison said the FBI’s Augusta Child Exploitation Task Force is comprised of officers from the Richmond County and Columbia County sheriff’s offices, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia State Parole Office. The Augusta-based task force conducted its operations on July 17 and July 18.

In the metro Atlanta area, eight adults were arrested on exploitation-related charges and two juvenile victims were recovered, the FBI said.

Emmett says the Metro Atlanta Child Exploitation Task Force, an extension of the FBI’s Atlanta field office, worked last week to identify, find and recover child exploitation victims and arrest those who were responsible for the crimes.

Out of 150 arrests nationwide,

11 were made in Augusta, one of 76 cities where arrests were made.

I find our harboring almost 8% of the total a rather grim indictment of our community, given the size of Augusta/Richmond County as compared to someplace like Atlanta or even Charlotte. I believe there are many people in this area who are covering for family members and/or friends instead of caring more about innocent children and young people having their lives destroyed.

Sickening.

These horrible people should never be allowed to live in peace in our community again.

Sick situation

just plain sick,

Don't get me wrong I am happy every one of these gutter trollers are off the streets and I hope all to the children and Teens are properly care for.

But re-read the carefully worded statement concerning Augusta.

"In the Augusta area, nine people were arrested on prostitution-related charges and two more arrests were made on exploitation charges..."

It did not definitively mention Children, or young teens here in Augusta.

Maybe the next article update will clarify the types of and ages involved here in Augusta since this happened July 17 and July 18 or 11 & 12 days ago the info should be available by now.

This is a Civil Rights crime, as a person (child) was sold into sexual slavery against their will. I hope every parent / person that allowed children to be used this way are locked up for a life time.

Or be given the option of a quickly applied death penalty.

Nocnoc is right

Nocnoc is right. It says of the 11 arrested in Augusta, 9 were for prostitution. It doesn't appear those 9 have anything to do with the subject of the headline.

@nocnoc

I don't know if they updated the article but there's a strong implication between these two sentences that the arrests were related to children:

"The operation rescued 105 children being victimized through prostitution, agents said, and led to 19 arrests in Georgia on child exploitation and prostitution charges.

In the Augusta area, nine people were arrested on prostitution-related charges and two more arrests were made on exploitation charges, Atlanta FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett said."

I read that to mean that 9 of Georgia's 19 child exploitation and prostitution charges stem from our area.

If the 9 arrests for

If the 9 arrests for prostitution involved children wouldn't there be a more serious charge?

I have changed my mind 180 degrees

I watched a documentary a few nights ago about sex slaves/enslavement. As a quasi-libertarian, I've always held the view that prostitution is OK, as it is a business arrangement between two consenting adults without a victim. Victimless crime as it were. After watching that program and these latest revelations about children being trapped into the sex trade, I change my position. There are many victims in the sex trade and it needs to stop. Put the traffickers under the jailhouse. Make it a capital offense where children are involved.

Death penalty for every last

Death penalty for every last person involved!! These are absolutely the WORST of the worst!! They have NO RIGHT to breathe the same air as decent human beings!! Want to make a strong stance against Child exploitation and prostitution, give ALL of these people involved the death penalty!! What better way to show the rest that you are VERY serious?

Well, I suppose you could TALK tough about child prostitution, say you're going to do a lot of things (but actually don't do much); then let a judge slap them on the wrist with minor prison sentences and fines!! Yep, that would teach them!!!

Actually, it was Operation Rolling Thunder that smoked out these criminals. The FBI just picked up the pieces.

We have an update

7:31 AM now at least states 2 were the worst of the worst.

I still say Life With NO Hope Of Parole.
An the law needs to be amended to allow the inmate to be able to request, at anytime, the immediate application of capital punishment also.

I couldn't agree more...

Everyone's views are spot on in cases like these. Any adult that is involved in the exploitation of children - whether it be prostitution, molestation, child-porn, etc - should be punished with the full extent of the law. Any judge that doesn't throw the book at these sick perverted lunatics should be ashamed of themselves.

We need to weed these sicko's from our society and put them on an island by themselves. Makes me sick and afraid to even have children with these kind of people in the world.

This is slavery pure and

This is slavery pure and simple. Sex slavery of children. It didn't say the ages or gender-not that it really matters. Look at a sex offender map and the number of pedophiles in this area-scares the heck out of you with young children. Even in my affluent neighborhood there is one. We tolerate a lot of perversions in the country in the guise of freedom but this one should be a no tolerance issue.

It Still Says 9 Arrests for Prostitution

It still says of the 11 arrested in Augusta, 9 were for prostitution. I'm not trying to downplay anything, but we all thought up the thread that 11 of 19 arrests in Georgia for having something to do with children in prostitution were in Augusta. Maybe there were only 2? I imagine the penalty for prostitution is minor. If children were involved I'm sure those 9 would be charged with more than simple "prostitution."

Age is relative

Children who have been put into the position of sex slavery either die or age. These prostitutes may be of age now but how old were they when they first entered this realm and how did they get there. No where near enough information for anyone to assume or speculate anything.

Article HAS to Be Improved

That name mentioned has been allowed to stay up so I'm guessing he was one of them arrested. We really need an article to clean up the loose ends here and define what the prostitution charges really mean. Plus, we need the names of those arrested.

The Name Is Now Gone....

So, looks like the Chronicle has now deleted the two posts that included the name of a man allegedly accused of these crimes.

I really wish articles would be more complete in the first place rather than having so many gaping holes! I was a better journalist for my high school newspaper than the professionals posting to the Chronicle website! Come on, guys. Who. What. When. Where. How. Why. These are the basics!

WRDW Info

They have their photos and names up. There were 8 females from ages 19 to 31 arrested for prostitution which was defined as disorderly conduct. 1 of them also had a possession of marijuana charge. 1 male, a 19 year old, was charged with interfering with a deputy. 1 male with pimping, a 28 year old. Another 21 year old for parole violation and possession of marijuana. The man mentioned previously in the comments is not one of them. There is not one mention of underage children in any of the charges.

Remember I Said

It was a carefully worded PR statement.

So far only some pimps and a adult stable of "Ladies".
I use the term "loosely" ... pun intended.

BUT NO CHILDREN report in Augusta YET.

Unless there is yet another embarrassing AC update, Augusta has had ZERO Child Exploitation charges.

But it so far appears the AC has darken the image of ARC somewhat with a misleading Attention grabbing Headline.

Remember also, it could be they have just been initially booked on holding charges to be increased at a later date?

GA LAW
Under OCGA 16-11-39 Disorderly Conduct - Any person who commits the offense of disorderly conduct shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

OCGA 16-6-9 - Prostitution -is a misdemeanor

O.C.G.A. § 17-6-12 - Pimping is a felony.

Pimping a child will get you 25 years minimum and a lot of heart ache in the big house.

BTW: while digging for the OCGA stuff I noted several Lawyers in Atlanta that specialize in defending just Sex Offenders. I guess they'll be busy in Ga for a while.
