The officer was trying to take Travis Berrian, 29, of Augusta, into custody about 4:15 p.m. when the struggle began, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Patrick Morgan said.
The agency was called in to investigate because the office, at 901 Greene St., is a state facility, Morgan said.
The area was swarmed by Richmond County sheriff’s deputies immediately after the shooting. More than a dozen law enforcement vehicles eventually responded.
The officer was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center. Morgan was unable to say what her condition was or describe her wounds. Her name is being withheld until the state probation office completes its internal investigation, he said.
Berrian, who had active warrants, died after the struggle.
Morgan couldn’t say who fired the gun but said at least two shots were fired.
Michael House said he was inside the building taking a class when the shooting happened.
“I heard a lot of fighting,” he said. “After that, I heard like five or six gunshots go off. They told everybody to leave. I was trying to see if it was a probation officer or a random person off the street.”
Morgan confirmed that at least 16 people were in the building at the time of the shooting.
“Everybody was taken to a secure area,” he said.
Morgan said an autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning at the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta.
