A Beech Island man giving a lift to a stranded motorist was killed in a Saturday morning hit-and-run.

Robert Brooks, 48, was giving a ride to Kathrine Bentley, of Windsor, who had run out of gas, when his scooter was struck from behind by a late-model Kia Sportage, a police report said.

Bentley was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center by ambulance. Brooks died at the hospital around 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

The highway patrol said the driver of the Kia, Sandra Huntington, 39, was arrested at her Beech Island home around 2:45 p.m. Saturday and charged with two counts of leaving the scene.

Unpublished

What IS it with these hit and runs? Is a local phenomenon or does it happen this regularly everywhere?
So sorry for the loss of Mr. Brooks, a good Samaritan.

Incomplete

The story does not say, but it is possible that the scooter was unlawfully stopped in the highway lane.

First of all, "The story does

First of all,
"The story does not say, but it is possible that the scooter was unlawfully stopped in the highway lane."
This does not make it okay. It is our job as motorists to watch the road around us.
This story is so very sad. Did she really think she would get away with it? What kind of person can leave the scene like this? She has no conscious.

Why?

Why would someone plow into the back of a scooter, seriously injure a man and then flee the scene? Now that the victim as died there will be a mountain of trouble coming down on the lady responsible. That is the most selfish thing you can do in an accident. Leave the scene when there is grave bodily injury. I hope a jury feels e same way as I.
Years in Prison!!!

The reasoning is that if you

The reasoning is that if you clip someone while you are DUI, you will spend less time in jail if you go somewhere and sober up before turning yourself in. If you are DUI and the person dies, you've avoided homicide charges. You would put yourself on the line for leaving the scene, but that's a far lesser punished crime I'm betting. Not to say that's involved here, there could be a number of other explanations. That's just one plausible reasoning.

Wouldn't change the charges against the driver of the KIA.
