A Hephzibah woman who said she was acting in self-defense when she stabbed her boyfriend was acquitted of murder charges.

A Richmond County Superior Court jury found Mattie Gaines, 28, not guilty on June 27 at the conclusion of a three-day trial.

Gaines said that her boyfriend, Boris Dease, 34, had been abusive in the past and again on Nov. 11, 2010. She said she just wanted to keep him off of her and slashed him with the knife in self-defense.

Dease, who was cut once on the neck, died the next day.

Thank you for your service.

The jury listened to the evidence and rendered their verdict. Let us hope that the jury in the George Zimmerman case can be so objective and courageous.
