GBI probes Augusta prison slaying

Tiraboschi

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a Saturday morning homicide at Augusta State Medical Prison.

According to special agent in charge Pat Morgan, agents were called to the facility about 4:15 a.m. Saturday to investigate the death of an inmate, 48-year-old Chris Todd Lowery.

Morgan said it appears the victim was killed about 8 a.m. Further details are not yet being made public, he said.

Thomas Joseph Tiraboschi, 35, has been charged with murder. Tiraboschi was processed at the Richmond County jail Tuesday morning and sent back to a Georgia Department of Corrections facility.

Lowery, of Guyton, Ga., was serving a life sentence for the 2010 stabbing death of his girlfriend, Linda Schaffer, 60, in her Rincon, Ga., home. Lowery is the 11th Georgia prison inmate to be slain in the past year, according to the DOC.

Tiraboschi was serving a 15-year sentence for a charge of vehicular homicide in Peach County. While driving a stolen motor vehicle in 1995, Tiraboschi led police on a high-speed chase that ended when he collided head-on with a vehicle and killed its driver.
