Doctors Hospital of Augusta, LLC, which is owned and operated by the for-profit hospital chain, HCA Inc., and Radiation Oncology Associates, LLP, of Augusta, have agreed to pay $1,020,000 to settle allegations they submitted or caused the submission of false claims to the Medicare and TRICARE programs for certain radiation oncology procedures that were allegedly performed without the requisite level of physician supervision, the U.S. Justice Department announced this afternoon.

According to a news release, the civil settlement resolves allegations that were originally part of a federal lawsuit unsealed July 3.

The lawsuit was filed under the whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act.

“We believe Doctors Hospital of Augusta followed all appropriate radiation oncology supervisory protocols and procedures existing at the time in question and worked diligently to provide the government information related to this situation” said Lindsay Thetford, the digital media and communciations manager at Doctors Hospital. “Now that a settlement of the government claims has been reached, we look forward to continuing to provide the quality cancer care for which we’re known.”

The case was investigated by Special Agent Ryan S. Coble, Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Investigations; Special Agent Randy J. Temples, Department of Defense, Defense Criminal Investigative Services; and Investigator Kimberly Reinken of the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Georgia. The United States was represented by Assistant United States Attorney Scott R. Grubman.

If you're part of a large

If you're part of a large corporation, you can steal money and all you do is pay a fine.

If you own your own business, or work for a small business, you pay a fine AND you go to prison.

Chump Change

You know if they agreed to pay $1 million, they took in a lot more than that in the fraud.

FRAUD

Fraud is fraud on many levels with this case. Both the hospital and radiology group had individuals billig these claims and they knew bill MD's for service preformed by mid-level providers is a big NO NO! You can bet if they did this to Medicare other carriers have been shafted.

I know a couple of people who

I know a couple of people who work at Doctors. They've been telling me how Doctor's has been pinching pennies and making their employees "work like dogs"...her words, not mine. I just chalked it up to the economy. But now I guess it's because they're making their employees and patients pay for their million dollar mistake!

Daddy told me never to steal. Then he said, "If you do steal, steal a lot, if you steal enough you do not have to go to jail." Daddy knew how the real world worked. You steal enough and pay off enough and you are part of the club, not club jail either.

Loved The Line

I loved the line, “Now that a settlement of the government claims has been reached, we look forward to continuing to provide the quality cancer care for which we’re known.” And what should've been added was, "and get back to doing what we were doing".

I'll accept the legal concept

I'll accept the legal concept of corporate personhood when a corporation is sentenced to jail.
