Man accused of falsely reporting death

  • Follow Crime & courts

Police say a Hephzibah man was arrested after he falsely told the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office that he killed someone early Sunday.

William Ghau Gouldsbrough, 37, told police responding to his Fairington Drive home that someone had broken in and stolen his 12-gauge shotgun around 1:30 a.m., an incident report said. Gouldsbrough said he fired a warning shot with his .45-caliber pistol and chased the burglars before losing his handgun. He told deputies he had killed someone.

As deputies cleared the house, Gouldsbrough walked to the 3900 block of Fairington Drive and was found in just his underwear. When police arrived, he again said he had killed someone.

Investigators found a bullet hole in Gouldsbrough’s bedroom and a spent shell casing. His .45-caliber pistol was found in a gun case in his bedroom, the report said, and his shotgun was in an upstairs bedroom. The firearms and ammunition were confiscated.

Gouldsbrough was booked into the Augusta-Richmond County Jail on misdemeanor charges of reckless conduct and false report of a crime, jail records show.
