An iPhone app led police to an armed robbery suspect Thursday morning.

A 31-year-old Grovetown man was pumping gas at Sprint, 2202 Gordon Highway, at 2:10 a.m. when a black male approached with a handgun and robbed him, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The man, later identified as Corderro Latron Morton, 23, of Amsterdam Drive, took the victim’s iPhone and wallet then got into the passenger side of an SUV and fled.

The victim told responding deputies his phone was equipped with a tracking app. Deputies tracked the phone around several locations in Augusta before locating it at Circle K on the corner of Deans Bridge and Lumpkin roads.

The deputies approached Carlos Tito Walters, 38, of Hephzibah, who appeared to have the phone, then used a command from the app to make the stolen phone play a ringtone.

Walters handed over the phone but told police he had just bought it from Morton for $60.

Morton was arrested at his residence and taken to the Richmond County jail on charges of armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Walters was not charged.

@JMO: I use and recommend an app called Prey.

Never had to use it but I have tested it and it is wonderful. It will track via GPS and take periodic pictures with the camera (among other things) all without giving any indication it has been activated.

It is free for up to I think 3 devices.

Why?

I've been puzzled for the last couple of years about why thugs seem to desire to steal cell phones instead of cash. I used to think that they wanted to fence the cell phones, but wondered how they succeed when so many are password protected. I'm beginning to think that they want the cell phones just to contact their thug friends and their baby mamas. When the service is cancelled, they just go rob somebody else. Is that the way it works?

He's been committing felonies

He's been committing felonies since he was 15, he spent 4 years in prison for robbery and he's on parole, he doesn't learn. Another one of RC's "best and brightest".

No charges?

Why were there no charges against Walters? He knowingly bought stolen property.

Moron

What a complete moron. iPhones have a tracking device that is enabled when the phone is on. Prove positive that some criminals can't see past their next high. The idiot that bought an iPhone for $60 off the street in the early morning hours should be arrested, too. He knew, or should have known, the phone was stolen. It's just a matter of time before Morton graduates to a more serious crime. Put him away for a long time.

Carlos Tito Walters , 35, of the 2400 block of Boykin Road, Hephzibah, theft by taking.

Besides who buys an activated cellphone at 3am - 4am in the morning thinking it ain't stolen?

BTW: It seems, it did not take Morton long to find a buyer that also happen to be a convicted felon.

Eric Holder would know where you are!

An App like this is great for times like this. However, we are being tracked by the NSA and other government agencies now. This just makes it easier to find us. Even if you take out your battery, I'll bet there's a capacitor in there powering the tracking function.

hard labor.

All I can say is we need to start doing like the North Koreans and start using hard labor.. None of this 3 squares, warm bed and cable TV.. You get up at 5 from sleeping on a concrete slab with a blanket and no pillow, you get oatmeal, and go to work.. You get mystery stew for lunch with water go back to work, mystery stew for supper and then to bed.. Tell me that wouldn't get someone's attention!! Oh, and while you're out working, you're chained to a 50 lb. ball..
