Three people who were walking in downtown Augusta about 2 a.m. Thursday were robbed of their wallets and $250 worth of electronics by two armed men.

The robbery happened near the intersection of Third and Ellis streets. That’s where two black men, one carrying a silver handgun, demanded the victims’ wallets.

The victims complied, giving up their wallets, a $200 cell phone and a $50 watch.

The suspects, described as skinny men who measured 5-feet, 10 inches tall, have dreadocks and were wearing white and black shirts, fled on Ellis Street.

Safe?

Didn't some officials say it was safe downtown, not too long ago?

Yes, Downtown does have crime.

But, it is mostly after dark and usually between 10pm and 4am.

Avoid walking around after dark, especially at 2am in the morning.

BTW: 3rd and Ellis is not a bad area. It is just what wonders up the street that needs policing.

For Bad?
check out Sibley and Ellis at 2AM on a Fri/Sat night.

I know this guy..

He actually lives on 3rd street.. He's a elite operations service member and has done more for this country in one week than these punks will do in their life times.. I'm surprised he didn't actually beat the tar out of them.. Had they not had a gun, I'm sure we'd be reading soldier beats two thugs half to death on Third and Ellis.. I would imagine if he does run across them as I'm sure they probably live not to far from him they'll wish they'd never come across him..

It's just a shame though what the Augusta down town area has come to.. I'm sure we'll be reading more tomorrow as I'm sure the thugs will be out in force to rob and pillage the locals..

Media at crossroads

The amount of private construction in the CBD, and surrounding neighborhoods like Olde Town continue to increase. High crime areas don't attract this much private construction. This didn't happen in the CBD, but even if the incident did occur in the area. The low crime rate in the CBD simply can't be ignored, because the media chooses to not report the crime outside of Richmond County. The Chronicle decided to print the article for the Carolina Pottery opening in Martinez, but not the July 2nd robbery in the Wells Fargo parking lot in Martinez. I'm positive the Chronicle would have printed the article, and covered the incident on the news if somebody were robbed in the parking lot of any bank in the CBD.

I've been commenting how the media reports all of the positives outside of Richmond County, but the daily crime reports are 95% geared towards Richmond. The sad thing is 95% of the positive stories aren't related to Richmond.

MC.. Do you really believe this was the only robbery in the CSRA this week or today? The Olde Town neighborhood is a very good place to live.

Mosovich... 'Downtown' must include East Augusta, the side of Harrisburg near 15th street, the area surrounding 15th street near Josey, MLK, Old Savannah, etc. The areas in the urban core who already had problems with crime. The CDB has a grand total of one homicide since the year 2011. Aiken, North Augusta, Martinez, Grovetown, etc all have more homicides since the year 2011. The jobs, entertainment, festivals, etc causes the population of the CBD to rise, and the crime is still low. Rural Sourcing(75 employees)is located in the Enterprise Mill, and represents the ongoing private construction in the urban core. The quote below is from the CEO of Rural Sourcing located right near the CBD.

''Rural Sourcing alone will add 20 to 30 more positions in coming months with the addition of its software-based lab and information-management system. Hamilton said he can easily see the company growing to a 200- to 300-person software development center.''

CBD

Perhaps 3rd and Ellis does not fit countyman's technical definition of CBD; but it certainly qualifies as "downtown."

LL... no mention of the

LL... no mention of the beating at the Salvation Army facility in the "urban core either... That's fairly close to Enterprise Mill.

As usual countyman chooses to compare dissimilar items to advance his agenda.

I can think of many violent

The boundaries of the CBD have nothing to do with me, because I'm not responsible for them.

I can think of many violent crimes that took place in 2013, but didn't occur in the CBD. I wonder when is the last time some of the areas outside of the CBD had more than 2 people walking on the sidewalk at one time.

Deflection Question of the Year Award

Countyman asked:

I wonder when is the last time some of the areas outside of the CBD had more than 2 people walking on the sidewalk at one time?

Augusta is not a sidewalk friendly place. You find very few miles of sidewalk outside of Countyman's Central Business District. So, if Countyman chooses to make this mugging and robbery about sidewalks, one must just sigh and shrug one's shoulders. Walk on, Countyman.

Gang

From Wesley Brown's story:

The suspects, described as skinny men who measured 5-feet, 10 inches tall, have dreadocks and were wearing white and black shirts, fled on Ellis Street.

This has to be classified as a gang mugging by the sheriff department. The description of the clothing, the hairstyle, the height and the body build of the three suspects is identical. They are members of the same gang. It might be the SkiDreWhiBlaShi gang.

Once again....

you cannot pick a select few block area and say there has been no violence since 2011. That's just an asinine statement!

As usual, countyman thinks

As usual, countyman thinks beating the topic to death with a lot of words is going to prove his point to further his agenda. It won't work. I live here. I know what is going on.

@Countyman

I guarantee you that someone walking in my Martinez neighborhood at 2 am is not going to meet two black guys with a gun mugging them. It has never happened, not even once. No murders either. And this neighborhood has many families representing every ethnic, racial and religious demographic in our area.

And the reason is pretty simple and straightforward. No proximity to two black guys with a gun wanting to mug somebody. (Not to mention the fact that they might die before they got to an exit.)

Third and Ellis?

What in the heck is around 3rd and Ellis? Nothing good at 2am I'm betting. Not that it matters, any person should be able to walk anywhere in this country at any time of day or night, but still.

Don't care if you're Bruce Lee with seal team 6 as bodyguards. Taking a stroll in that part of Augusta, especially at 2am is not an intelligent undertaking.

Maybe someone was simply delivering chicken soup to an ailing grandmother?

Is it just me or do the boundaries for the CBD/Downtown areas move to insure no crimes occur in those areas?

CBD CBD

CBD is beginning to sound like a social disease! I was in San Antonio for Fiesta week. There were thousands of people in the downtown Riverwalk and Alamo area. I wonder why there were no reports like this from there??
Could it be the area was adequately staffed with LEO's to include the surrounding areas? Hmmm. Isn't that how other cities keep a lid on crime where they have large numbers of visitors?

"High crime areas don't

"High crime areas don't attract this much private construction."

You know, like Pepperidge.

Builders don't care diddly squat what the crime rate is, all they care about is making money.

And I have known so many people over the years who tried living in Old Towne and left solely because of crime
