An Austell resident who was in the Augusta area when he received child pornography was sentenced to nearly 18 years in prison Wednesday.

Starke Allen Hawkins, 60, was sentenced by U.S. District Court J. Randal Hall to 17½ years in prison, followed by 20 years of supervised release.

Hawkins will be required to register as a sex offender.

According to the evidence presented at Hawkins’ plea and sentencing hearings, a computer storage device, later determined to belong to Hawkins, contained about 100 images of child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. The device also reflected online chats of a sexual nature between Hawkins and at least one minor.

Hawkins admitted that he had downloaded and viewed child pornography images and had shared images with a girl.

His computer and storage media were found to contain more than 530 images and at least three videos of child pornography.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a U.S. Department of Justice initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.

Once in a while they are, but

Once in a while they are, but it's usually when they get older and tell.

Children cannot possibly comprehend what is being done to them and how to stop it, that's what those sick perverts count on.

Rescue

Most of this porn comes from Russia and other former socialist countries. Some of the porn is known cases that have been tried in courts and allow LE to identify it as child porn. We in law enforcement have to arrest the collectors and hope the victims are somehow found and helped. Computers have made a difficult job more so. We do what we can and hope for the best.
