A convicted felon was sentenced Thursday to nearly 19 years in prison without parole for possessing a gun.

U.S. District Court Judge J. Randal Hall sentenced Demetrius L. McKinney, 33, of Augusta to 18 years, nine months in prison. He will have an additional five years of supervision once released.

According to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office, in May 2012, McKinney had a loaded firearm in the glove compartment of a car.

McKinney said he had the gun “for protection.” Convicted felons cannot possess a weapon for any reason.

McKinney’s criminal history includes burglary, two drug offenses and an aggravated assault, making him an “armed career criminal,” which mandates a minimum sentence of 15 years.

Local Lawyer, I was wondering

Local Lawyer, I was wondering the same thing. But then I got to thunking, if this guy was on probation or parole, the cop's face must have lit up like a Christmas tree. A free search of the vehicle. No warrant, no cause, no nothing.

Absolutely Fantastic

Wonderful job. These are the types of people that we always see in the news later for killing innocent people and law enforcement officers. I am so happy that Judge Hall put this man away for quite some time. Thank you Judge Hall.

minimum sentence of 15

minimum sentence of 15 years.

does that automatically convert to 15 years of actual days in jail or is there eligibility for 2-for-1 (or 3-for-1)?
