Ex-prison guard pleads guilty to marijuana charge

A former prison guard caught taking a pound of marijuana to trade with inmates pleaded guilty Thursday.

Paul Castillo, 26, pleaded guilty in Richmond County Superior Court to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and criminal attempt to trade with inmates.

Judge Michael N. Annis accepted a recommendation for a sentence of 18 months’ incarceration followed by 18 months’ probation under the First Offender Act.

Castillo was arrested Feb. 7 at the Augusta State Medical Prison after he was found with the marijuana and two large bags of tobacco.
