A former Butler High School band director accused of having sex with students was acquitted of all criminal charges Wednesday.

The Richmond County Superior Court jury found Anthony Shelton not guilty of six sexual assault charges. Shelton, 42, testified as the final witness in his trial. He told the jury that he never had a sexual relationship with any student.

Shelton was accused of having sex with three students during the 2007-08 school year.

A discussion of the evidence

A discussion of the evidence presented at trial would have been a welcomed addition to this report of the final outcome.

Need to know more

Today with online media, the jail report, comments without names attached, and all of the other outlets, many are guilty in the court of public opinion before even going to trial.

DNA

Look back at other articles in this thread and you find that the first trial was delayed waiting for DNA. What is interesting is that DNA was negative.

Now do the girls get charged

Now do the girls get charged with filing false charges and do the parents have to pay the legal bills of Mr. Shelton. They should. I am with you on this one Palmetto.

The bigger question now is

The bigger question now is what becomes of this gentleman's life? Does he get his job back? Certainly his credibility is ruined. And why did the AC publish his photo in this story? It all seems terribly unfair and in bad taste AC.

since he was acquitted looks
Unpublished

since he was acquitted looks like he should be entitled to his job back plus any back pay and benefits...well i guess the mammy of the girls who accused him will have to look somewhere else to "git dem a lawsuit check from da gubiment" if he was convicted the next step would have been to file a civil suit against the school district and of course with that conviction in tow it would have been a slam dunk they would have gotten a settlement..but alas the mammies will have to find another stooge to "pimp their daughters out" on in hopes of "gettin paid". so i guess the mammies will have to call the salesman at the local carmax or drivetime and tell them to remove the hold on that 2011 black chyrsler 300 with the 22" chrome rims and tinted windows becasue they wont be buying it after all

Mug Shots

Palmetto is correct. Publishing mug shots in an acquittal story is tacky.

Dittos on the mug shots. As I

Dittos on the mug shots. As I said on the thread about the portable finger printer, only those guilty as charged should have mug shots and biometrics on permanent file.

Only a few ways to look at

Innocent and jury felt the students credibility.

Innocent and jury found reasonable doubt.

Guilty and found innocent due to lack of hard ♂ evidence ☺ by the jury.

The DA blew it or the defense Lawyer was better.

It would be nice to actually read about some of the evidence to better judge the case.

Question, will this teach retain his teaching certification?

I agree

Despicable to publish mug shot of a guy who was acquitted.
Why not publish names and photos of the accusers whose testimony was not believed??

this mug shot is a reflection of how he was wronged

people are drawn to the rubberneck of the mugshot of the guilty. Well I believe AC is justified in showing a picture of this guy, who certainly had his mugshot shown prior to being pronounced guilty. And probably most of you ogled it then. So, now you can ogle his innocent behind....

This news paper needs to

This news paper needs to practice what they preach I had a comment deleted that I had written about the child drowning incident in Monday's Paper telling me that I can not comment on anything where the person is not accused of a crime. Well this gentlemen was found not guilty by a jury of his peers but they place his picture on this website. It is embarrassing enough to be accused of a crime you did not commit and then being found not guilt only to have your picture published. Shame on You Augusta Chronicle !! And you can't be bothered to put your reporters name on the article. This goes to show that you knew you were wrong for this.

Dropped Charges

The girls need to be charged now for filing a false police report and their parents liable for Mr. Shelton's attorney fees.

"Evidence"

Just to be clear about this part of the justice system...

EVIDENCE is that set of facts and testimony presented to the jury. No matter what you think, it is NEVER the items released to the public.

Confusion about this, along with widespread ego problems, led to the outrage about OJ Simpson's murder trial.

So. Be sure that if you see something about this case, you are not in the courtroom, you are NOT the jury - and by definition, you are NOT seeing "evidence".
No matter what you think.
If it were your life on trial, you would insist on this yourself.
