Richmond County sheriff’s investigators charged Ryan David Jones with three counts of murder Thursday in the slaying of his mother, father and brother. Three charred bodies believed to be those relatives were found Tuesday in a field near Deer Chase Elementary School.

Ryan David Jones was charged Thursday with three counts of murder in the slayings of his mother, father and brother.

The motive remains a mystery, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Thursday afternoon.

“Hopefully within the coming weeks we can try to figure that out, but right now we’re not quite sure, so it would be ill-advised for me to say something otherwise,” Lt. Calvin Chew said.

Jones, 26, lived at the family home on Pinnacle Place Drive, according to the Richmond County jail. Because of the mounting evidence, authorities said they decided to charge him after holding him two days as a person of interest. They had earlier indicated they might wait until the bodies were positively identified through dental records.

After initial media reports of Tuesday’s discovery of the three bodies, now tentatively identified as Roosevelt and Edna Jones, and their son Russell, investigators said they received a phone call from another son, Steve Jones, a Macon school principal. He asked the Sheriff’s Office check on his family members at 3729 Pinnacle Place Drive, Hephzibah.

According to a narrative provided by the Sheriff’s Office, Steve Jones said he not heard from his family members since Monday.

When deputies arrived at the residence, they forced their way inside the house and found large amounts of blood. After obtaining search warrants for the residence and reviewing the scene, investigators said it appeared multiple murders had taken place. They also bore similarities to the bodies discovered earlier, police said.

Autopsies determined each victim had been shot at least once. Ballistics evidence from the autopsies and the residence matched a firearm belonging to Ryan Jones that was recovered when he was taken into custody, police said.

Ryan Jones has a criminal history. According to court records, he was charged in 2006 with theft by receiving stolen property and misdemeanor counts of carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a weapon without a license.

He pleaded guilty in 2007 to theft and was sentenced to four years of probation as a first offender. The weapon charges were dropped. He completed his sentence in February 2011.

Staff Writer Sandy Hodson contributed to this report.

Oh, man

This is beyond awful. How could someone kill his own mother?

I hope this man, if he did do this horrible thing to his own family, is just so totally crazy that he didn't realize what he was doing. I simply cannot imagine a sane human being embracing the degree of evil that would allow, much less commit, such a savage act.

It looks like he had some trouble with the law a few years back, perhaps related to drugs. Drugs. That would explain a lot.

Sad!

I never saw this one coming. Shocking to say the least. Didn't an earlier report state that Ryan Jones worked as a teacher in another county? This is sad that someone could slaughter his own family.

Totally devastating and unbelievable! How anyone could do this to anyone is something that I don't understand. @curly -- Ryan was not a teacher; his brother Steven is a principal in Macon.

Matricide
Unpublished

Matricide is the most heinous of all murders. Beyond feticide. The person who gave you life. When will our society wake up and realize were have created a new culture. STREET ANIMALS. They need to be put down.
No mercy, no empathy. These home grown sociopaths are coming to a neighborhood near you.

You never know....

....what twisted and evil motives lurk within a person's heart. Sometimes fine families like this one produce a rogue evildoer. There is evil in the world, often inexplicable to us. Sad situation all around.
Patricide, matricide and fratricide all in one crime. Just awful.

Absolutely Unbelievable

Total devastation to a complete family. What I don't understand....is how parents don't recognize that a child has this propensity. I think I know my four kids pretty well. Some have deviated, and strayed, and been brought back like the prodigal son. But for me to think anyone of them would harbor this potential, much less act upon it? I just don't understand. Maybe because I have never seen it, I don't know. Understand, I am not being critical, just trying to imagine what I might see in my kids to alert me of this possibility. Or what the Jone's, as educated as they were, might have missed. Heinous is the only word I can think of for this crime, if true as suspected.

Don't know if this guy had any connections to the mental health system or not. But many of these "front page" news makers do. Got to wonder was it worth it ... in getting rid of programs that were aimed at reducing behavioral problems, especially with kids/adolescents, several years, ago.

Fiat-.ux, I understand your disbelief that a fellow human could commit such a heinous act. However, I can assure you that drugs or no drugs, at some point during the actually murders, loading the bodies into a car, hauling them to a remote location, unloading them from the car and setting fire to their bodies, he was very well aware of what what he was doing.

Shocked and Grieving

I am shocked and grieve for the family. I can't imagine how devesting this is for the family. They knew he was troubled but we as parents want to help our children in any way possible. No parent wants to thinks their child is capable of such a thing. No one knows what demons are in the human spirit or their snapping point. There probably were lot's of signs along the way but not to this extent. As we look around we see more and more the power of Lucifer lose on the Earth. We need God more now than ever before. "If my people, who are called by my name, will turn from their wicked ways........". Untie GODS hands!!!!!

I only asked a question, cotton, the only one not being respectful here is you. I HAD read up on the matter and the question was not answered in any of the things I had read in the Augusta Chronicle. I had used the Augusta Chronicle search engine, and it still did not come up. Other sources are not as reliable for confirming their information, which is why I wanted to check HERE. I wanted to know if Rujo Trill was the victim or the alleged killer. I suppose there is a chance that Rujo is the victim, since you say so, but I wanted to read the facts from a relatively reliable source, not from some anonymous, rude and judgmental poster who thinks it is okay to jump on someone for simply asking a non-judgmental and legitimate question. What in my question led you to be so rude? Or are you simply in personal pain and took it out on me? If so, I'm a forgiving person, but a lot of other people aren't. So be careful about "opening your (own) mouth" to others as you put it, because you stuck your foot in it, for one thing. You don't know who I am. If you have suffered his loss, I understand and forgive, but understand this, other people, like me, are suffering losses, too. And that is why I have empathy for people in the same boat. You have to be careful not to lash out in anger, often compounding the grief in ways that you can't anticipate and probably will regret. I know the feeling, but you must have self-control. If you continue to lash out and jump to wrong conclusions about other people's intents or feelings like that it is likely to backfire.

@ AutumnLeaves: Russell (aka Rujo Trill) was the victim. Yes, he did rap like so many others his age, but he was a very intelligent young man attending college. This killing had nothing to do with his rapping. I've known this family for years, and you have no idea how shocking this whole situation is. This was a godly family and all the kids were raised up in church. Please let's focus on helping the family with the funeral expenses and praying that they can make it through the next few months of this tragedy.

This is the kind of crime many of you watch on television and go to the movie theater to pay to watch. This is your entertainment. Just add alcohol. drugs and guns. Therefore, why do you act so surprised. This is what society collectively has produced. The reason why this happened is in your mirror.

rebellious, after the Sandy Hook shooting I heard many mental health specialists during media coverage who stated how difficult it is to predict individual acts of violence like this. The stated reason is that in most cases, individuals that display the same observable behavioral warning signs never become violent towards others. If there is a suite of behaviors unique to people who will go on to commit violence, mental health specialists have not yet found it.

I suggest people remove the snapping at each other

Asking who Rujo Trill is doesn't constitute disrespect or imply any causal relationship to this abomination. And nobody needs to be lecturing anyone else about manners.

Please just pull your off-topic comments.

Excuse me,

If you say nobody needs to be lecturing anyone else about manners, then why are you? I am not pulling my posts because the first was on topic, and the second was defending my first, which means it was also on topic, the third, I'm defending the first and second. As for prayer? I've been praying, unceasing for this town and the people in it, specifically and in general for decades and I'm not stopping now. And regarding the rapping, I made no inference, implied or otherwise the rapping had anything to do with the killing. I have NO idea what the killing was about. And I've heard all about the family, you are not telling me anything I don't already know. I even know the neighborhood where the church was and the Sunday liquor house that used to be not far from there. Decades before that a close family friend's child relative died on Roosevelt Street, so I am not likely to overlook reading something about people or places with ties to that area; I have them, too. I read the name Rujo Trill in an unofficial source, but not the context. and was looking for a reference to that name in the article with the proper context. I still don't see it in the article. So I'll just keep checking until I do.

Well...

I'm sorry you are offended, but your concern about defending yourself and the lengths to which you are doing it just feels so irrelevant and even inappropriate given the magnitude of this tragedy.

I would have pulled my request as well, and then there would have been nothing at all of this.

Well...Fiat

It is the magnitude of this tragedy that has me so upset! I'm disappointed and puzzled by your comment Fiat, but it is the earlier comments by other people that offended me. I think you are incorrect in saying my posts are off-topic. Also, unless you are an employee for the Augusta Chronicle, with responsibility for this site, I don't think you should be telling other people to pull their posts. If you are an employee of the Augusta Chronicle, I think you should be forthright about it. Instead of answering my questions about the article, the posters launched into personal attacks, which IS not allowed. That discourages discourse on the topics. If they will pull their first attacks, then I will pull my responses to them, but not my first ON TOPIC post that they reacted inappropriately to, which you were not excluding in your blanket comment. As far as defending myself, if I don't stand for something, I'll fall for anything. Something needs to be done about this culture of death; that young people are violently taking other people's lives. Why??? It is heart-breaking and unfathomable!
