An Augusta man who sold guns without a license was sentenced Wednesday to 78 months in prison.

Ryan Rufus Harris will also have five years on supervised release after he completes the prison term.

Harris was convicted in U.S. District Court of selling four guns in 2009. At the time, Harris was not licensed or allowed to possess a weapon because of a previous conviction of distributing cocaine.

If he had NOT been convicted of a Felony

article kind of wants the reader to think it is illegal to sell a firearm to another private individual without a government license.

But this is not the law.

It would have been perfectly legal to conduct any Private sell WITHOUT a license as long as the seller:

* does it with the buyer of and in the same state he is a resident.
* he could legally own a firearm.
* was the legal owner of the firearm.
* The weapon does not require a special permit (eg. FULL AUTO)
to name the major items.

I my case I always use the following recommended Private Firearm bill of sale:

It is always good to cover your tail legally.

nocnoc is right on the money. shame on the A/C for trying to keep up the mis-information on guns that Pres Osama wants. Just a little common sense goes a long way to preserve liberty.

I wouldn't be so harsh on AC

The headline got "lookers". A convicted dealer of cocaine is exaxctly what law-abiding gun dealers, or casual sellers, don't want to be "painted" with.

I'm just glad he got caught. I'd hate it if people like him slipping through the cracks were the cause of some lunatic lefty making a law where I couldn't sell my 10 gauge to my neighbor if I so choose.

AC not to blame

I don't think it was deliberate, sometimes space requirements and word count crunch end up leading the reader down a less than neutral path.

Remember until all of Augusta GA is completely into the Digital age the AC NEWSPAPER "paper"is ruled by the column inch restriction.

Which sometimes forces brevity.

A few open questions regarding the article.

Was the person purchasing the firearms legal to own them?
Was this part of a Sting operation?
Was was the gun sale tracked to him. were the guns involved in a crime?

Why did it take so long to bring him to court for something he did in 2009, 4 years?

Poorly written

... article, not up to the AC's usual standard. The final paragraph should have been the lead, unless this was supposed to be just another AP anti-gun plant. The headline should have started with "convicted felon," IMAO.

Yes RM 6 years Federal

Yes RM 6 years Federal charge, that means he'll do all of it. 7 years is the norm for ATF weapons charges.I know it's quite a shock for those that follow the talking points of antigun propaganda.

A drug dealer convicted of any more crimes should stay in jail for ever.
