An Augusta man used a road sign to shield himself from a hail of gunfire on Wrightsboro Road on Sunday after four people asked to borrow his cell phone and began shooting as they ran off.

Bret Mason, 26, of Evans, told police he was at Super Express on Wrightsboro Road when he was approached about 3:40 a.m. by four black males, one of whom asked to use his phone to make a call. When Mason obliged, the four “began laughing” and started to walk toward Maryland Avenue, according to a Richmond County sheriff’s report.

Mason said he stopped them and said they needed to stand still if they wanted to use the phone. The four then ran off, with Mason chasing them.

After reaching the street corner, one of the group began shooting at Mason with a handgun. Mason took cover behind a sign.

Deputies found several shell casings on Maryland Avenue but were unable to find suspects.

Never let a group like this

Never let a group like this invade your space. Try to move on if you can. If they follow, be prepared to defend yourself, hopefully with your legal, permitted, concealed firearm. I'm tired of hearing about punk scumbags and hoodlums robbing people. It's time to take back the streets, parking lots, and the Riverwalk. Do whatever is necessary to protect yourself, your family, and your property.....whenever and wherever necessary.

You can't do that dichotomy, it is profiling......

I can just hear the race cards hitting the table already.

Well, the crime was not in the central business district, so it doesn't count.

BTW:

can anyone say Cell Phone GPS tracking?
The police now know every place that phone called from and where it sat for extended period.

4 Idiots are going down, IF the Investigator(s) are allowed to do it ?

Like Little Lamb wrote, it didn't happen in the CBD, so it probably didn't happen. If it did, there's no money in tickets to be made, so it's not one of 'Grateful Mother's' priorities. Assuming the case notes and such aren't lost, left behind in another move.

Hold up on blaming the victim

I have worked til 2am on my job on Greene St...sometimes later if they needed me to stay.....at times a person needs gas at odd times...soooo should I worry about the gas station or worry about running out of gas on the Gordon HY...That is a choice some make....

This was a while back & thank goodness I don't have to make a choice like that any more....
But MANY work these hours....nurses---drs---cooks--firemen etc.....the problem isn't the hard working guy ...now is it??

If these PUNKS had a JOB they would be TIRED & in the dang bed at that time...so stop the dang freebies & MAKE thm get a job.

Same in Atlanta...a big joke & they laughed when mugging the female cnn center anchor..

If cops see four young thugs

If cops see four young thugs walking around at 3 in the morning they should be rousted and asked what they're doing out at that time of the morning. If they're juvi's they should be arrested. Augusta needs tough laws to stop these punks from doing harm to innocent people. If they're worthless parents don't watch them then give the parents fines for they're kids bad behavour.

So vigilante justice is a-okay to some of you? Bet if the tables are turned and one of your precious loved ones is shot because someone with an itchy trigger finger couldn't wait to play Rambo you won't be so gung-ho for quick, armed solutions without a zero thought to the situation.

Some thugs are going to have to take some dirt naps, before they understand that their playtime is now over. It is time for us to take back our streets and neighborhoods.

So what. Let 'em squawk.

They're out late prowling the streets in the wee hours of the morning, and the operative word is "prowling". They sure as heck should be rousted, if for no other reason than to protect them from getting killed by someone who really will put up rather than shut up.

Did y'all read about the family in Atlanta that were beaten bloody and knocked out simply for stopping for gas in a non-profiled neighborhood? That garbage beat the father and mother unconscious and broke the teenaged daughter's face, simply and only because the father stopped for gas after dark in the thugs' neighborhood, and dad was guilty of being white. That is the exact reason the garbage gave to the family as they beat the crap out of them.

It's unconscionable that these animals are allowed to be treated as citizens and live off the public dole, the ones here and in Atlanta.

Maryland Avenue ia almost 2 miles from that Super Express. So they ran down Wrightsboro past Damascus, the full length of Daniel Field, crossed Highland and Monte Sano with the victim chasing them? Something doesn't add up ...

Duh.
1. Concealed carry.
2. If you do not have your weapon on you, LET THE PHONE GO! Or your wallet or whatever they get. Your life is not worth it. Turn around, call 911 and then call the phone company to terminate service.
