Man fired on after lending phone to group

An Augusta man used a road sign to shield himself from a hail of gunfire on Wrightsboro Road on Sunday after four people asked to borrow his cell phone and began shooting as they ran off.

Bret Mason, 26, of Evans, told police he was at Super Express on Wrightsboro Road when he was approached about 3:40 a.m. by four black males, one of whom asked to use his phone to make a call. When Mason obliged, the four “began laughing” and started to walk toward Maryland Avenue, according to a Richmond County sheriff’s report.

Mason said he stopped them and said they needed to stand still if they wanted to use the phone. The four then ran off, with Mason chasing them.

After reaching the street corner, one of the group began shooting at Mason with a handgun. Mason took cover behind a sign.

Deputies found several shell casings on Maryland Avenue but were unable to find suspects.
