Police await extraditon of riverwalk assault suspect

Police said it might be next week before a suspect in a May 3 assault and robbery returns to Augusta.

Kevin Devonte Richardson, wanted in the brutal beating of a couple at Riverwalk Augusta, is in the custody of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department in Elkhart, Ind., where he turned himself in on Wednesday.

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Calvin Chew said they were awaiting confirmation that Richardson would agree to extradition, before working out the logistices of bring him back to Georgia to face charges.

Richardson is the second suspect arrested in the assault of South Carolina residents Ashley Solesbee and Wesley Spires, who were clubbed with a metal bat or pipe as they sat on a bench on the riverwalk. Spires remains hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

Robey Eugene Moses, 21, was arrested in Newberry, S.C., on Friday and extradited to Augusta on Tuesday.
