The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Hephzibah man with felony vehicular homicide and felony hit and run after a bicyclist was struck and killed Wednesday in the 3500 block of Mike Padgett Highway.

Christopher Provost, 35, shown in this surveillance photo, had been sought for questioning in the Wednesday hit-and-run fatality on Mike Padgett Highway that left cyclist Dennis John Skillman dead.

Deputies named Christopher Provost, 35, of the 1500 block of Citation Road, as the man they said drove away from the scene of the 6:30 a.m. collision in a red-and-white Dodge Ram with front-end damage.

Provost is accused in the death of Dennis John Skillman, 42, of the 5000 block of Old Waynesboro Road. Skillman was riding his bike northbound on Mike Padgett Highway to work and was wearing a reflective vest, according to deputies.

Provost, also northbound, is accused of veering off the road and hitting Skillman, then fleeing.

Sheriff’s deputies made contact with Provost at his home, according to a news release, later taking him into custody at Richmond County jail.

The case will be forwarded to the prosecutors and additional charges are pending, according to the release.

Skillman’s body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Augusta for autopsy.

and so it starts again...

the usual speculation and negative comments on another tragedy...why you find enjoyment in making such judgement calls remains a mystery to me, and the fact that the AC allows it doesn't help. I think that all comments of this nature should be removed because they do not support a "robust but respectful conversation". No respect in any of these types, and while I would say you should be ashamed, it would be a waste of my time because if you were, you'd never take advantage of times of tragedy to post such hurtful comments.

Just because some liberal passed a law that tells you it is OK to play in traffic on a bicycle, it is still dangeriously stupid to do so. Would you let your child go play in traffic? Don't answer, because I am sure there are some that would and do! Ride a bicycle facing traffic, maybe get a ticket, but live to fight it court.

Oldredneckman96, this man was

Oldredneckman96, this man was not playing in the traffic. He was riding a bicycle to work, obeying the law. What would be your excuse if he had been breaking the law, riding against the traffic, and got hit.......

my condolences bettyj and wendyr, to you and your family.

Yeah, well...

...driver is outrageously wrong if facts are accurate and needs serious jail time.
However.
I would not ride a bicycle or walk in either direction on any road in the CSRA or America for that matter. For any reason. It is just too dangerous no matter how careful you are. Only place I would is in China because there you would be in the middle of hundreds of other cyclists (I've done this) and drivers are more courteous to cyclists, probably because everyone was on a bicycle until just a few years ago when prosperity enabled some to buy cars so they remember what it was like.
Sad all around.

I was holding off saying

I was holding off saying anything until the arrest.

He lives down the street off browns rd. near where a druggie crash into the corner house last year.

If it is the same truck we have seen speeding down Brown Rd. from the Pine Hill corner store a lot? It will made the streets a lot safer when he is off of them.

Please be tolerant

Folks, you may not want to ride on the roads but some will always take the risk. There are places in Europe were it is well-respected and their roads are very narrow. All I ask you to consider is to show tolerance for this activity. Very deep sympathies for the victim.

@nocnoc

According to the RCSO's Inmate Inquiry website, the $140 bond is only for the Failure to Maintain Lane charge. The other two charges have no bond set.

WOW!

So sorry for the loss of this man seems he was a hard worker and didn't deserve to be just left there. I use to know the guy they arrested!! Long time ago but you are right betty he used drugs and drank a lot. He use to work at Chavous Paint and Body. Seems like he may still have been working there if they were trying to paint his truck.

Deadly accident

My deepest sympathy to the grieving family and may he rest in peace. We know he is in a better place - a good man who was trying to make a living the honest way and had to be taken from his family. To those that have character and have posted their comments - God bless you! To those that don't know what it is not to have a car to get into to drive to work in comfort - just hope and pray it never happens to you.
