Augusta man dies from motorcycle injury

An Augusta man died during the weekend after losing control of his motorcycle near Gordon Highway last Thursday.

Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten said Kevin Ports, 41, was pronounced dead at Georgia Regents Medical Center about 9 p.m. Sunday from a pulmonary embolism because of blunt-force trauma.

Police said Ports was traveling east on Gordon Highway about 2 a.m. Thursday when he accelerated at a high speed onto Milledgeville Road.

The motorcycle went airborne after it veered off the road at the intersection of Milledgeville and Kissingbower roads. Ports was thrown from the vehicle.

Police said the wreck appears to have been alcohol-related.

Five out of six of the fatal wrecks on Richmond County’s roads this year have been alcohol-related, according to sheriff’s Lt. Lewis Blanchard. A seventh accident occurred when a teen wrecked a motorbike on private property. It was not alcohol-related.

Toxicology results, which can take months to be returned, are pending in most cases.

Blanchard said police hoped Operation Thunder would help reduce the number of cases of driving under the influence, but unfortunately, he said, it’s one of the categories that is not decreasing.

Police have made 257 arrests for driving under the influence since the operation began Feb. 14.

Ports is the seventh wreck fatality in the county this year.
