Augusta baby sitter accused of child abuse pleads guilty

Julia A. Baitmon

An Augusta woman accused of using a plastic ball bat to discipline a 6-year-old pleaded guilty Thursday in Richmond County Superior to child abuse charges.

Julia A. Baitmon, 22, was arrested in February when a friend reported her youngest child came home with welts and a knot on his head after Baitmon baby-sat for her four children. The children said Baitmon forced the victim’s older brothers to hold him down for the punishment, Assistant District Attorney Hank Syms said.

Baitmon pleaded guilty to felony cruelty to children and three misdemeanor counts of cruelty to children. Judge Sheryl B. Jolly imposed a five-year probation sentence under the First Offender Act, with the first 180 days in jail. Baitmon is to take anger-management class, obtain her GED and find a job. She is prohibited from baby-sitting while on probation.
