Scene from Broad Street brawl shows person on sidewalk being stomped

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Calvin Chew said the video, which shows multiple altercations near the front of the New Moon Cafe in the 900 block of Broad Street, was just brought to the attention of investigators after someone found it on the video-sharing Web site.

The video shows several men and women stomping and beating one another with fists near the cafe on Broad Street. Several people can be seen standing around the fight videotaping the incident on their cell phones. The 2-minute video ends when the crowd scatters after sounds like gunshots can be heard.

Chew said police are currently looking into the incident to see if any reports were filed or if witnesses can be found.

The YouTube poster lists the time as 2:31 a.m. April 27.

Police?

While watching the news this morning, I saw a well-spoken man being interviewed about this fight. He said he saw it happen and as he was leaving he saw police cars and an ambulance coming towards the scene. If he was telling the truth, then RCSO did know about the incident and did not learn about it after seeing the video.

Personally, having watched

Personally, having watched the video, I think this is, to an extent, much ado about nothing. Being somewhat knowledgeable about human life, I can assure you these were people who more likely than not knew one another and decided to work their issues out directly. Those commenting on this video, while obviously exulting in being afraid of more or less everything, though they won't cop to it, would have to be very foolish to get caught up in this nonsense. Young people fight. They fought when you were young, and yes, they fought on the streets, and the only difference now is it ends up on youtube. They will fight in the future. They even, though it doesn't make the news so often, fight in Columbia County, having done it myself as a youth. I can assure you none of the participants looked or sounded anything like those on the video, but I think we acquitted ourselves well enough.

Having left Augusta, I can't say I miss it. I particularly don't care for the comments section here on the Chronicle. As far as I can tell, everyone walked away, or, in this case, ran away at the sound of gunfire, so how bad a beating did these people really put on each other? And do you all, the commenters, truly believe these young people have any interest in harming you at all?

Yes, someone will eventually be killed somewhere sometime, but, that, too, is in the cards in life. It happens all the time all over the world - even in the nicer neighborhoods, so called.

I remember walking the streets of First Friday in 2001: All sorts of madness was current on those streets. It makes this look somewhat quaint, since it is only on one part of the street. I remember plowing through several blocks of low grade mayhem and emerged unscathed.

Anyway, there's a long history of violence downtown that I have listened to from long time Augustans, stretching back decades.. Most of the time it just doesn't get reported. People will beat their breasts. Life will go on nonetheless.

@specsta – “…when we grow

@specsta – “…when we grow up…”

Pretty hard for a child raised in poverty by one parent, bombarded from society and school with the message “there are no moral absolutes, if it feels good do it”, and represented by a political party that for all intents and purposes, wish to keep them exactly where they are. Pretty hard for that person to grow up and act like a mature, productive adult instead of acting like an animal out solely for immediate gratification.

Don't be so naive.

This could happen/has happened anywhere/many other places on the daily. You can spend all day on YouTube watching group fights of ALL RACES.

AMERICA LOVES VIOLENCE!
AMERICA LOVES VIOLENCE!
AMERICA LOVES VIOLENCE!

There is a video going around of the Zetas (Mexican Drug Ring) beheading someone.....where is the outrage about that? Or is this outrage due to the fact that everyone in THIS PARTICULAR video is of African American decent???

I would rather this brawl

I would rather this brawl than:

a school shooting with unarmed children. (Sandy Hook)
Or a bomb detonated that hurts hundreds. (Boston Marathon)
Or another school shooting because you were being bullied. (Columbine)

We are all in this together.
Divide and Conquer = the goal of the higher ups.

Brawl on Broad Street

Why didn't the owners call the police? Yesterday's report says the fights lasted about 2 minutes. That was the longest 2 minutes in history. I find it hard to believe that the police didn't hear about this incident before it appeared on YouTube. They knew.

Different Levels
Unpublished

I watched this video last night and digested it on different levels. First, I thought, what a bunch of stupid idiot punks -- out on the street and fighting like a bunch animals. Then I realized where they were fighting, then I thought it was funny -- right in front of where the chairwoman of the DDA lives, and talks about how SAFE downtown is. Then sadness stepped in, like where is the world are the Sheriff cars on Broad Street.

BTW: Seenit - The Mayor of Atlanta, where the CNN reporter got her iPhone snatched -- is a woman.

Business was closed

Delirious58, the owner didn't call because I assume he was tucked in his bed asleep. This business is only open for Breakfast/Brunch and was not open when this fight occurred.

Absolutely awful

What is the solution to this?? I have no idea. So many causes go into it - absent fathers, failed and rotten schools, poverty, gangs, lack of moral standards - that I don't know where to begin. It is sordid and depressing. The only answer people seem to find is work hard, save up, move to a safer area for the sake of your family and never go downtown after dark and only go there if you have to during the day and just abandon these folks to their destiny. A grim prospect but I do not have a better answer. Horrible. And depressing.

DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA
Unpublished

Recent events have shown that downtown Augusta needs to be avoided after dark. Apparently that's when all the thugs come out to prey on decent people. I feel bad for the businesses that will be severely impacted by these vermin. I thought this area of Broad was safe but i guess I was wrong. Don't go to Augusta unless you're packing heat!

There are some that seem to

There are some that seem to be making the argument that because this is commonplace around the country, that we should accept this behavior.

There are some who seem to believe the word naïve is a synonym of the word nonacceptance.

its time for a "monkey" curfew..by looks of the picture the police should stop, challenge, and frisk all monkeys after 6pm. you dress them up but can't take them or let them go any place with out instances like this happening. it would be considered raaaaaaaaacist if the police drove up and just started shooted these animals instead of arresting them...but folks what you have here are more of the same....obammy's kids i guess "dey be mad cause da victum got he welfare and EBT and dey didn't git dairs"

lets profile shall we.....we know "deys be black" but on the parental front..a product of a single parent household, high school dropouts, daddy no where to be found, most if not all are not a stranger to the criminal justice system, no jobs, little or no job skills, one or more of these animals have an illegitimate child/children and of course the animals' sorry azz mammy lives of "da gubiment" welfare system like "dey baby's momma" so the cycle of welfare dependency and crime will be repeated....so folks here you have "da welfare and foo stamps" generation in full view of the world to see

Facts

The last shooting in the CBD was July of 2012, and I can't even remember the one before that.

Three homicides throughout Richmond County in 2013?

Zero homicides in the CBD over multiple years?

One large fight downtown, and the city is now Oakland, Atlanta, and Detroit?

The incident on the Riverwalk is terrible, but crime happens in Beverly Hills and Manhattan too. There's a serious rush to judgement by the media, and several people in the CSRA.

Let's improve the safety downtown, but let's not 'sell out' downtown just to get viewers.

Do you really believe all the BS you sell? brawl on broad (while police are away on Op. Thunder), mugging and attempted murder (ok, so severe beating but they should be charged with such crime) Friday night and another beating/carjacking either the night before or earlier in the day (still trying to pin down which is correct on that).. the Friday night beating all the police were on Broad St (it sure seemed as such anyway) only a couple blocks away..

How are facts considered BS?

How are facts considered BS? People have been robbed, beaten, etc all over the CSRA.

How come three instances of crime didn't generalize those areas?

I don't understand how three types of crime make downtown 'unsafe', but several areas in the CSRA have experience many crimes including homicides.

The Riverwalk incident could be considered attempted murder, but why don't the other attempted murders or murders this year define other areas.

Where were the cops?...

Maybe all the cops had hit their 40 hours for the week patrolling the speed trap on RiverWatch and couldn't be out to police downtown. RCPD trying to make easy money while things like this go on

operation get the cops out of downtown

Our esteemed sheriff would rather that our cops act like tax collectors on the roads than actually patrol downtown. keep the revenue flowing by stopping speeders and let the hoodlums roam free. Typical third world thinking

Let's see, we've been teaching our children that they evolved from animals and when they act like animals we are surprised? Oh, one more thing....we've also told them there is no God, so there's no one they have to answer to......ever. Schweet!

Some seem to think all that

Some seem to think that all the violence in the downtown area is no big deal. At a time when augusta is trying to bring families and businesses back to the downtown area, this is a big deal. Just look around at the areas that have a reputation for violence and you will see boarded up businesses ,low property values and high unemployment. I was part owner of 2 businesses in Regency Mall back in the 1980. We did very well for several years until crime became common place. People did not feel safe at the mall so they stopped coming and the mall died along with many jobs. Augusta Mall is now having this same problem on the weekends. I fear this may happen downtown unless the leaders don't act quickly. I would not want to have my family end up in the area where there is gangs fighting and gun shots.

Where are the police?

I come from Athens and a fight like that on the main street, going on for as long as it did would have ended with some folks going to jail. Where the heck are the police, get out of your cars, take a walk, mingle with the people, do your job. Come to Athens, find out how to handle late night crowds, large events(which I hear you guys have a problem with) your presence alone would help. Cameras won't do anything for this city if there isn't a cop in sight. You pay for police to be there already hey I know less politics and more accountability just might help.

Check out the number of hits this video has received on YouTube. When I viewed it a few moments ago it was up to 58K. Oh.......and check out some of the comments underneath the video. They're as bad as the fighting.

Nobody has so far mentioned this point so let me ask. Does anyone know what actually sparked this mini-riot? I'll warrant it was something entirely trivial. I note the involvement of females in the fracas, so let me offer my 0.02 as to why.

Someone "dissed one of da sistahs".

Why not round them all up, put them in a cage,

give them numbers like ball players and have them go at it.

We could even take bets on the last miscreant (male and female) standing. Might add a tidy sum to the county budget.

They would be doing what they enjoy, and the taxpayers would benefit as well.

Just a satirical thought....
