Couple attacked on Riverwalk Augusta

  • Follow Crime & courts

A couple were attacked on Riverwalk Augusta on Friday night.

About 11 p.m., the Edgefield, S.C., couple were sitting on a bench when two black men armed with a baseball bat or pipe approached and demanded money, a police report states. The men began hitting the two with the object in the face and head.

The male victim is in critical but stable condition at University Hospital.

Facts vs opinions

There's no point of debating against people who don't even visit downtown, and already have their minds made up.

People have been shot, raped, beaten, killed, in both Aiken and Columbia Counties.... Anytime crime happens in Richmond County the establishment/area is automatically turning into Regency Mall.

The same few people will never claim any single area outside of Ricmond is unsafe. Maybe one neighborhood or apartment complex, but they don't generalize like Richmond County.

I never bring up the outside counties until the posters who live in those counties bash Richmond County first. I don't understand how the CBD can be this dangerous place, but it's richer than everywhere in the CSRA except West Augusta, Summerville, Forest Hills, Aiken, Martinez, and Evans.

It's funny KSL says he/she feel can't feel safe on the Riverwalk after this incident. But he/she still feels safe in Aiken(city of 30k) even after two cops were killed, and another injured(save the bullet proof vest)in a matter of months.

How is this worse than the killing of two police officers? Why didn't the sky fall in Aiken?

I notice Austin is not on the e-mail list. Heh. If there was a delay it came from the investigator not giving the info to the PIO. This was a Saturday and the info did get out before the evening news after the PIO was informed. I don't see it as that big of a deal when it came out. Of course it is a tragic crime and something like that has to be prevented from happening again.

Facts vs Opinions

The multi million Hampton Inn hotel(Hilton) is under construction. The new Fairfield Inn(Marriott), Holiday Inn Express, American Tire facility, new golf range, etc are between Barton Chapel and the SC state line. Their not located past Barton Chapel going to Grovetown/Harlem. I guess the developer of major companies don't agree with the posters on here about what's a cesspool.

Lillymills. I'm not being defensive, and only tired of the same daily comments. The sky is always falling in Augusta no matter the article.

I just read some people comment how the city should warn the visitors at the TEE Center about the Riverwalk lol. We can tell they obviously don't spend time downtown, because the police already know the surrounding crime rate. The comments would be taken different if they proposed this to protect our investment, but they clearly want people to think it's not safe.

Should Columbia County warn the people leaving the Walmart parking lot or Target parking lot on Washington rd at night? I can think of multiple robberies in that part of Evans.

Went to Riverwalk years ago. Parked next to St. Paul's.

Nieces and nephews had a great time but when we returned van had been broken into and purses were gone. Haven't been back. Nieces and nephews have kids of their own now! Reckon the experience made a lasting impression?

When unknown assailants are at work...

...you get the word out ASAP. People in the vicinity with cameras...people who may have seen something suspicious...time is precious in these cases.

...and RM...as you can see...the info I have in just about every case that matters is far more than what the dept. puts out. Had I been home yesterday afternoon...chances are I would have had it all on before Noon...because the info was sitting there on my computer. Sorry I am just one guy...

What has Deke done to curb crime on the riverfront?

Isnt the riverfront one of our prime, but underutilized assets? We can make this area 'safe' if we just focus on what is important. Safety should be a #1 focus.

Already safe

You can always make the area safer, but it's already overall safe. Please don't let people who haven't been downtown in many years fool you. Anybody can go ask the local police officers, and they will tell you the same thing.

Non safe areas can't attract $100 million(Watermark) private investments. The Watermark was new condos, hotels, renovated train depot, etc on the Riverwalk.

Cal Ripken/Jim Jacoby could have easily picked downtown North Augusta from the beginning, but they wanted to build in downtown Augusta. If the Riverwalk was so dangerous they would have picked North Augusta first. People could have easily drove an additional five minutes into North Augusta.

lol

They picked first where they thought they could get the most handouts. When that didn't work they sold the team. When you have a Mayor (who works for the taxpayers not cal ripken) lobbying for you of course you want to build there. Just like costco built where they did...because they knew they would be serving 2 states with that location and they got a heck of a tax break. I see you forgot to mention that one of the cop killers was actually already involved in a murder in Augusta and how many times has Aiken county beat Augusta in murders per year? Nobody ever said Aiken doesn't have unsafe areas but I have yet to see a unsafe corridor like Augusta has from the carolina line all the way to barton chapel (look at how many murders occur on barton chapel and you even had one just the other day at north leg) thats fact vs. opinion.

cwp reciprocal license

There are a few ways a SC CWP holder can LEGALLY carry in Georgia. I think the best advice is to check with your CWP instructor or SLED"s website, for the latest options.

Whoa

Neither of the two policemen, I wouldn't call them "cops" were killed on Aiken's main street. We do not have a Riverwalk.

Divide and Conquer

How do we know the suspects were from Augusta?
Why are you siitting on a bench at 11pm @ night?
Where were the same comments when the white guy killed people in S. Augusta, a few weeks back?

Why use code words? Be real.

Divide and conquer. We are such a divided society.

Couple attacked on Riverwatch...

Four lines dedicated to the story of couple being attacked by two black men with either a bat or pipe, beaten in the face or head to take something that doesn't belong to them. A HORRIFIC Attack!!! Where is the OUTRAGE!!!! All this couple wanted to do was spend a little time together enjoying the evening outside! I guess there's no money in crime but giving out the speeding tickets brings in the revenue.

The outrage is there

Read some of the comments & you will see it..

What RCSO needs to do is place some decoys there....make them look innocent & maybe have some big diamonds on.....if you can work wonders on rolling thunder ...this should be an easy task.....cgee would probably help with this..but most of them would need a hospital trip if cgee is there.

Augusta's just like any other

Augusta's just like any other urban area. Those downtown on a beautiful spring evening are semi-fine as long as you stick with the crowds. Don't even think you can take a moonlight stroll down by the river to watch the moon over the water. Just not being realistic.

I hate it for the older couple, who may have believed the BS.

Fact is, something could be done to stop this town from becoming another Atlanta, or Columbia, but the people in charge either can't or won't do anything about it.

internationallyunknown, I agree 100%. The liberals, democrats and black leaders have DONE a great job of creating a "divided society". The Marxist/communist in the WH is an excellent example. His campaign was all about class warfare and racism. The liberals, democrats and black leaders have done a great job of brainwashing and keeping blacks uneducated and dependent on the handouts from the gov't. The liberals, democrats and black leaders have done much to enslave millions of black people.

I am simply amazed that one person can regurgitate so much tripe daily... especially when facts are staring them right in the face.

Austin Rhodes has a point about putting out BOLOs quickly and alerting the public quickly. . . . But, let's face it, with a description of two black men armed with a baseball bat or pipe, there's not much realistic chance of a helpful tip coming in.

If You Aren't Armed...

...for personal defense, you need your head examined. If you think staying home and locking your doors at night is sufficient protection, you are wrong.

Get a weapon. Learn how to use it confidently and without hesitation. Your life and the lives of your family depends on it.

Pay zero attention to the naysayers.

What are we to do

We can go through training in SC to get a concealed carry permit yet not be able to protect ourselves across the river on Riverwalk or Broad Street.

By the way, we drove down Broad St yesterday, the first time in years for me. I could not believe how dead it was. So sad. So wrong. There is so much potential there. Guess business people have no confidence in the leadership.

Several People Have Already Opined....

...that not arming yourself because of a lack of reciprocity in SC/GA carry permits should NOT be a reason to suffer an attack because you obeyed the law. Protect yourself, worry about permit violations later.

And some one was complaining

And some one was complaining the other day he avoided SC because he could not allowed to carry concealed in our state. Well why should he be allowed to carry in our state when we have to go through training?

ROBBERS GET NO POINTS

But this is NOT a safe place to be sitting with your girlfriend at 11:00 p.m., now is it?
I suppose you could be walking down Broad Street at 3:00 a.m. shouting at the top of your lungs and waving $100 bills in the air, but short of that this is about the unsafest thing to do -- in any city, not just Augusta -- I have heard in a long time.
