  • Follow Crime & courts

A couple were attacked on Riverwalk Augusta on Friday night.

About 11 p.m., the Edgefield, S.C., couple were sitting on a bench when two black men armed with a baseball bat or pipe approached and demanded money, a police report states. The men began hitting the two with the object in the face and head.

The male victim is in critical but stable condition at University Hospital.

A safe place to walk??

Sugar coating will get you nothing!!

A man can't just walk around with a dang baseball bat & not be noticed.....sooo how did it happen......put the police down there or you will have an empty riverwalk.....so sorry for this innocent couple....but you can bet your sweet fanny they won't be back.
I will have my gun if I need to go there.

BTW: Not the 1st or 100th

BTW: Not the 1st or 100th such incident in the area.

Back in the late 70's a group of white teens (Faith and Sonny) robbed, shot and killed (murdered) the son of the Anderson SC. Flea Market owner up on the Levee. They use Faith as the bait to get him up there.

prov227 - I agree somewhat

prov227 - I agree somewhat that after 9pm dark it needs to be either enforced or access limited to monitored access points for safety.

Of course a few of us could do a community policing effort to help the RCSO cover the area when RCSO is busy doing road blocks.

You shouldn't be on the defensive on this one - you should be screaming for more police presence! It is your town and you don't want a baseball bat upside your head! So sorry for the couple!

Operation " You Were A Criminal Once"

I think a little Charles Bronson action is necessary. He needs a nice looking chick with him. Seeing I don't have much work to do between 9 pm and 5 am, I just might find some entertainment.

for the people who are in denial about local crime suspects (black)
wake up and smell the coffee. they are involved 90% of the time in violent crime. augusta is a cesspool. high crime, high poverty.

"The people who live outside of Richmond County(Aiken for example), and love to bring up how they don't visit much often specifically downtown."
countyman, I'm from Aiken county and as far as I am concern you can have Augusta and RC. The only problem is the thugs are spilling over into AC. The more section 8 housing a county has the more thugs it has.

No excuse for the 17 hour lapse in public reporting by RCSO...

The victims had no cell phone...they were taken...the only thing to do was make it back to their car and drive to the hospital. It is a miracle the young man was able to do it, given his condition.

Friends of these folks have been in touch with me since Saturday morning...horrible situation.

KSL. I urge you to carry anyway. No one will ever know unless you need to defend yourself, and at that point a weapons charge is the least of your worries. I seriously doubt the DA would even consider it if you were in a self defense posture.

NocNoc. You and I are on the same wavelength 99% of the time, but I have to disagree with you on the camera concerns. Most cameras could not be actively monitored anyway, too much manpower. What they COULD do however is be a deterrant because the cockroaches would know their mugs will be on record if they break the law. Besides, do you think you can scratch your butt or pick your nose without some stranger seeing it anyway? LOL

^5's to everybody who noted that while the police were out ringing up the cash registers without probable cause; preventable, REAL crime was being committed by real criminals....

There should be uniformed and undercover officers walking the streets at all times, ESPECIALLY during times when there are lots of people about. I recall a time on River Street in Savannah one Saturday night when a couple of people in a boating group literally showed their butts (mooned a buddy through a restaurant window). A 20 something black male walked up and told them to get out of the restaurant. They gave him lip until he reached inside his t-shirt and brought out the badge in had on a tether around his neck.
Downtown Augusta and places like the Mall sorely need that kind of deterrent on Frist Friday and other times when criminals and malcontents are likely to be about.

There should be warnings in the Marriott letting the out-of-towners understand the dangers around the Riverwalk with the two serious attacks there in the past couple of days.

What if...

the local media was given the information, but chose not to report it? My source(s) indicate that an email went out. What time/date was the email sent to the media? Some specific people may not have gotten their own personal notification, but when did the local media (meaning news people) get notification?

Fat chance that media would "choose not to report" this...

The email that went out from Shane McDaniel was tagged 4:03PM in the copy that was forwarded to me...from another media person. 17 hours after the fact.

Subject: Incident

1. On Thursday night (050213), at around 2345 hours, a resident of Beech Island, SC was leaving the Riverfront Pub, 531 Broad Street, and walking to his car when he was assaulted by unknown person(s). The victim had visible injuries to his face and head and was found to have sustained a concussion. Taken from the victim were the keys to a 2002 Hyundai Sonata GLS, Dark Grey in color displaying a SC tag of 1909FR.

2. On Friday night (050313), at around 2300 hours, a couple from Edgefield, SC, were sitting on a bench on the 700 Block of Reynolds Street on the Riverwalk when they were approached by two B/M’s who were armed with an aluminum baseball bat or pipe. The suspects were described as tall and slender wearing all black clothing. The suspects demanded money from the male and female victim and then began hitting both the male and the female with the metal object, striking them in the face and head. The male victim is currently in critical but stable condition at University Hospital.

Investigators are asking for assistance in locating either of these suspects and the 2002 Hyundai Sonata, SC Tag 1909FR.

I agree that non locals be warned at their hotel to stay in their rooms, order food and venture out in daylight. As for concealed weapons, can SC residents legally carry in GA? I believe SC doesnt recognize a GA permit. Between this type activity and the Third world checkpoints I will keep my business in CC as much as possible and carry when Im in RC. Ill take my legal chances if in danger since I cant do squat at the cemetary.

Scary and unacceptable

You are right Austin Rhodes. This is very unacceptable. We wonder why our downtown isn't successful? Well there's the answer. Behind the Kroc Center on the canal there are these wonderful emergency posts about every 50 feet or so. You pick up the phone and it dials 911. I also think the blue light on the top starts to flash. Why couldn't we have something like that on the Riverwalk and other downtown venues. They certainly made me feel safer while I sat and read my book on the canal one sunny day...

And so begins the decline of downtown Augusta. Police State style checkpoints harassing and chasing away law abiding motorists, meanwhile thugs and gangs on foot take over.. Soon downtown will be just like it was in the late 70's.

@Walrus

No, Ga does not reciprocate with SC regarding concealed carry. Who cares though? Who is to know unless you need to use the weapon? If I need to defend my life, concealed carry violation be da*ned.
