JOHNSTON, S.C. — A former football player for Strom Thurmond High School and S.C. State was shot Friday, and his girlfriend has been charged in his death.

Police said Ashley Butler, 23, is charged with murder in the death of Otis Key Jr, 25. Investigators say Key was shot in the chest around 11:30 a.m. Friday in their Johnston home after an argument.

Butler is being held at the Edgefield County jail.

Key played defensive end and nose guard for S.C. State from 2006-09, according to The (Orangeburg) Times and Democrat.

I grew up in

Johnston. I wasn't aware they even knew how to spell murder, much less commit it. Safest town I had ever lived in.

Why is the fact he was a ball

Why is the fact he was a ball player given such prominence in this article? Are they more valued to lose than other non ball people? Why not as well give some info on the girlfriend?
